Dutch motorcycle racer Edwin Straver died during the early hours of Friday morning, succumbing to injuries sustained in a fall in the Dakar Rally last week. The 48-year-old racer was seriously injured on January 16th, when he fell in the 11th and penultimate stage of the race, NOS reports.

Straver was resuscitated at the scene. It took emergency workers 10 minutes to get his heart beating again. He was rushed to a hospital in Riyadh, where examination showed that he had broken one of his upper neck vertebrae. He succumbed to his injuries earlier this morning.

Kickboxer Badr Hari may represent the Netherlands as a boxer at the Olympic Games in Tokyo later this year. The Dutch boxing union NBB asked the 35-year-old kickboxer whether he'd be open to this adventure, and Hari has shown interest, according to the Telegraaf. 

Hari is currently under contract with martial arts organization Glory. If he decides to go for Tokyo 2020, the organization will have to give him at least a few months off. The parties involved still have to negotiate on this front, the newspaper writes.

AZ plans to have a new roof on the AFAS stadium in Alkmaar by the start of the coming football season, CEO Robert Eenhoorn said at the club's New Year's reception. For the rest of this season, the Alkmaar team will play without a roof on their stadium. 

"The aim is for the new stadium roof to be finished for the first matches of next season," Eenhoorn said. "Furthermore, the renovation plans will focus on comfort and experience."

Football club Telstar released a statement on Wednesday, distancing itself from the behavior of its fans in a cup match against Ajax. During the match, fans shouted racist slurs at Ajax goalkeeper Andre Onana, NU.nl reports.

Several people said on social media that spectators shouted "banana" at Onana, among other things. During the match Telstar said that it took note of events. The club released a statement afterwards.

“Downright disgusting”, is what Dutch football association KNVB called racist chants by FC Den Bosch fans directed at Excelsior player Ahmad Mendes Moreira on Sunday. “This does not belong on a football field”, Jan Bluyssen, KNVB’s competition affairs manager, said to NOS.

On Sunday referee Laurens Gerrets had to stop a match between FC Den Bosch and Excelsior for ten minutes, due to FC Den Bosch fans’ behavior. Songs about Zwarte Piet and monkey chanting were heard from the fanatic M-side every time Moreira had the ball, according to the broadcaster.

An 18-year-old man from Amsterdam was sentenced to 18 months in prison, four of which conditionally suspended, by the court in Amsterdam on Wednesday. The court found him guilty of hanging a hand grenade on an outer wall of football club ADO's supporters home in The Hague. Two other men were acquitted, NU.nl reports.
