Like all politicians who have/had to do with the incidents around the arrested activists on inauguration day, Minister Ivo Opstelten said, during the question hour in the House on Tuesday, that he regrets these arrests happened. 

GroenLinks MP Liesbeth van Tongeren asked the Minister of Security and Justice about the arrests of the activists Maessen and van der Hoek.

“This should have never happened and demonstrations against the monarchy should be possible in the Netherlands,” answered the Minister.

Since the elections of last year, the coalition partners VVD and PvdA have reached the minimum number of seats in parliament according to the poll of Maurice De Hond. When elections would be held at this moment, the two coalition partners would only have 40 seats together.

This weeks poll shows that VVD would loose one seat and would have a total of 22 seats, which are 19 seats less than they occupy now in the House.

This means that Minister Lodewijk Asscher of Social Affairs has to transfer 300 million euro, plus interest, to abroad.

This is the conclusion of Lodewijk Asscher himself, after losing a couple of lawsuits. He is going to pay now because he thinks that if he will appeal, the damage will be more.

Call credits  should at least be good for half a year. A majority in the House wants Minister Henk Kamp of Economic Affairs, to arrange this by law as soon as possible, reports the AD on Tuesday.

D66, PvdA, PVV, CDA and SP follow with this call an action of the consumer organization Consumentenbond. The Consumentenbond thinks that call credits may not expire after only one month. They say that companies like T-Mobile, Vodafone and KPN earn about 68 million euro a month on expired call credits.

More voters, than people might have thought, seem to be true believers of conspiracy theories, according to an investigation by the Free University (VU) of Amsterdam. 

Especially people who vote for PVV and SP, frequently believe in conspiracy theories. But also voters of 50Plus and the Party for the Animals (PvdD) have a tendency to believe in conspiracy theories rather than good arguments, or even scientific facts, which prove those theories to be wrong.

Until 2018 about 15 thousand of the 150 thousand jobs in the Civil Service will be lost. In total, the government wants to reduce the expenditure of the central government, with almost a quarter, to 13 billion euros. Minister Ronald Plasterk of Internal Affairs says that if the attempts to form super provinces will fail, provincial governments and the big cities will have a huge fight within the coming thirty years. 

“Big cities become not only bigger but also more powerful. Therefore the provincial governments must be reinforced. It has to be avoided that big cities like Amsterdam and Almere are the decision makers in their province,” Plasterk warned the House during a debate on Tuesday.

Despite the crisis and the fact that more than half of the world has not enough food, more food ends up as garbage in the Netherlands. This was reported on Tuesday evening by the Ministry of Economic Affairs.

The consumers are responsible for the majority of the food waste. Comparing to 2009, an astonishing 6 to 60 kg more food was wasted per person in 2011.

PVV leader Geert Wilders visits the Schilderswijk in the Hague on Tuesday. His visit is a reaction to an article which was published on Saturday in ‘Dagblad Trouw’. The newspaper concludes, from their own investigation, that a part of the Schilderswijk is developing as an enclave of orthodox muslims.

“The Schilderswijk is a neighborhood, in The Hague, where more strict religious muslims live, close to each other, than elsewhere in the city, and they want to apply the strict muslim rules to the street,” according to Trouw, and, “Non-muslims en moderate muslims suffer from this.”

State Secretary Frans Weekers of Finance didn’t send important information to the House, although the House had unanimously asked for that, reports RTL Nieuws. CDA MP Pieter Omzigt says that it is a ‘crucial document’.

Together with a large trade delegation, Minister Lilianne Ploumen of Foreign Affairs will begin her official visit to China on Sunday. She will go to Hong Kong, Shanghai, Beijing and Chengdu.

Laura van Geest is the new director of the Central Planning Bureau (CPB), according to RTL Nieuws. She succeeds Coen Teulings, who had been the director of the CPB since 2006.

Van Geest is the current Director-General of the State Budget at the Ministry of Finance. She was previously active in various other positions at Finance.

Teulings received a royal honor during his farewell ceremony today. He was appointed Officer of the Order of Oranje Nassau.

Tampering with the mileage counter of a car will be prohibited starting 2014. On Thursday the House voted on a bill of Minister Melanie Schultz (Infrastructure) about this.

Tampering with kilometer counters costs consumers 150 million euro annually. For insurance companies and the government, these costs are estimated to be even higher. Schultz hopes that the new law will deter further acts as offenders will be caught quicker and will be punished.

A revolt is rising amongst members of Dutch labour party PvdA against the government plan to make undocumented residency a punishable, criminal offence in the Netherlands.  A number of party branches and prominent members will ask Labour leader Diederik Samson to break the coalition agreement, to adjust the direction and restore the fundamental party principle of 'the right to a decent life'.
