A man shot and killed two police officers and a passerby in the center of the Belgian city of Liege on Tuesday morning. He then took a cleaner hostage at a nearby school. The gunman was killed by the police. Prime Minister Mark Rutte expressed his condolences to his Belgian counterpart Charles Michel, he said on Twitter.
A "new, more upscale" Dutch flag was placed in the large parliamentary chamber of the Tweede Kamer on Tuesday, after criticism on the appearance of the temporary flag.
Late last year a temporary flag was placed in the chamber on the initiative of the SGP and PVV. Critics called the flag too small and said that the foot in which the flag stood looked like a piece of cheese, according to ANP.
Dutch political parties just can't manage to get more diversity among their aldermen. In 2014 around 3 percent of the 1,500 aldermen in the Netherlands had a migration background. After the municipal elections in March this year, that percentage seemed to have dropped somewhat, Trouw reports based on its own research.
Over two thirds of the 335 municipalities that took part in the elections in March have now concluded their coalition negotiations and appointed their aldermen. According to Trouw, the percentage of aldermen with a migration background is now around 2 percent.
On Monday Minister Stef Blok of Foreign Affairs will explain the Netherlands and Australia's decision to formally hold Russia accountable for its role in the downing of flight MH17 to a meeting of EU foreign ministers in Brussels. He is counting on unanimous support from the European Union on this decision, sources told newspaper AD.
The Dutch Armed Forces' repatriation and identification service is making a final attempt to identify 103 unknown Dutch victims of the Second World War. As the group of immediate surviving relatives is getting smaller and smaller, time is running out to put a name to these still anonymous victims, the Ministry of Defense said, NOS reports.

Debate center De Rode Hoed on Keizergracht in Amsterdam was vandalized overnight. The center's windows were broken and statements like 'Fuck FvD' and 'No fascism' were spray painted on its facade. On Friday evening populist party FvD is holding a lecture about the Brexit at De Rode Hoed, AT5 reports.
The police are investigating the vandalism.
The BUK missile system used to shoot down flight MH17 over Eastern Ukraine in July 2014 belonged to the 53rd brigade of the Russian Armed Forces, the Joint Investigation Team revealed on Thursday. Russia denies this, NU.nl reports.
According to Russia, no Russian missile installation ever crossed the border between Russia and Ukraine. The Russian Ministry of Defense says it had nothing to do with the downing of flight MH17.
The Netherlands and Australia hold Russia accountable for "its share in the downing of flight MH17". Both countries informed Russia about this step, the Dutch government announced in a statement on Friday.
Prime Minister Mark Rutte discussed the abduction of Amsterdam girl Insiya Hemani on a "high level" in India on Thursday, a spokesperson for the Prime Minister said. On Thursday Rutte met with his Indian counterpart Narendra Modi, ANP reorts.
Rutte would make no further comments about the case. "That is not in the interest of finding a solution", his spokesperson said to the news wire.
The new Amsterdam city government of GroenLinks, D66, PvdA and SP presented its coalition agreement on Thursday. "The coalition agreement is ambitious and will change things in the city", GroenLinks leader Rutger Groot Wassink said, according to Het Parool. "I always said: the city must become more sustainable, more honest and more democratic, and this agreement does that."

A majority in the Tweede Kamer wants the government to promise that the Binnenhof in The Hague will be gas-free after the large-scale renovations set to start in 2020. State Secretary Raymond Knops of Home Affairs and Kingdom Relations will do his best, but won't make any promises, he said in a parliamentary debate about the Binnenhof renovations on Wednesday, NOS reports.
The Netherlands does not recognize the outcome of the elections held in Venezuela over the weekend, in which leftist president Nicolas Maduro was re-elected. "They were not free and independent elections", Minister Stef Blok of Foreign Affairs said to the Tweede Kamer, the lower house of Dutch parliament, RTL Nieuws reports.
GroenLinks, D66, PvdA and SP successfully reached a coalition agreement for Amsterdam, D66 faction leader Reinier van Dantzig announced on Twitter. Amsterdam's new coalition will present their agreement on Thursday.
The negotiations happened in a "very good atmosphere", Van Dantzig said.

Turkish president Recep Tayyip Erdogan called on European Turks, including Dutch-Turks, to become more politically active in their second home. "Take the nationality of the country where you live and take an active part in politics. Become a member of parliament", Erdogan called during an election meeting in the Bosnian capital of Sarajevo, NU.nl reports.
Erdogan also called on his supporters to not betray Turkey or deny their origin. "Protect your religion and language well. If you lose that, you are lost", he said.
The vacancy for the new mayor of Amsterdam will be reopened because too few suitable candidates have applied, the Provincial Board of Noord-Holland announced, NU.nl reports.
A total of 29 candidates applied in the first application round. Only four of them have a full-time position in government. The confidential committee handling the appointment finds the number of suitable candidates too limited.
Aruba, Curacao and Bonaire are dealing with many asylum seekers from Venezuela due to a humanitarian and political crisis in the country. The three islands, which form part of the Kingdom of the Netherlands, are getting too little support from the Netherlands in sheltering these asylum seekers, Aruban Prime Minister Evelyn Wever-Croes said to NRC.
She called the Netherlands' attitude "too indifferent and irritating". Aruba is located less than 40 kilometers fro the Venezuelan coast. Around 5 thousand Venezuelans have already fled to the island.
Sharon Dijksma is one of the new proposed aldermen for the PvdA in Amsterdam, the party announced. Should the coalition negotiations end successfully, she will handle the portfolio for traffic and transport, water and air quality, ANP reports.
