A bearded vulture was spotted in Oostkapelle and Dishoek over the weekend. The bearded vulture is Europe's largest bird with a wingspan of almost 3 meters, and usually does not occur in the Netherlands, NOS reports.

"You expect a bearded vulture in the Alps or the Pyrenees, but not here", bird photographer Marcel Klootwijk said to Omroep Zeeland. "What an amazing bird."

Two divers went missing the Grevelingenmeer in Scharendijke in Zeeland on Saturday evening. The body of one of the two divers was found on Sunday evening. The search for the second diver continues on Monday, NU.nl reports. 

A spokesperson for the police told the newspaper that the body of the missing diver was found late in the evening, shortly before the search was called off for the day. He could not say exactly where the body was found.

A majority in the Tweede Kamer wants the government to promise that the Binnenhof in The Hague will be gas-free after the large-scale renovations set to start in 2020. While the Netherlands can expect more rain and thunderstorms over the coming days, the weather should clear up to sunshine by the weekend, according to Buienradar.

The south of the country saw a lot of rain on Tuesday, and the showers will keep falling for the rest of the week. "But that drizzly weather is slowing pulling away through the south", Jennifer Faber of Buienradar said to RTL Nieuws. "There is not a lot of wind, so that's why the showers sometimes stay above a place for a long time."

A wolf has repeatedly been spotted in nature reserves in central Drenthe over the past months. According to forestry association Staatsbosbeheer, this could be a sign that the animal may be settling down in the Netherlands. Though this will only be confirmed if every sighting was the same wolf, and if it stays in the same area for more than six months.

The government does not have to take an extra safety margin into account when, for example, expanding highways or increasing the speed limit, the court ruled, RTL Nieuws reports.

Foresters shot and killed three red deer on the A6 highway between Lelystad and Almere on Sunday afternoon. The animals escaped from Oostvaardersplassen after activists cut the nature reserve's fences in 21 places on Saturday night, NU.nl reports. 

According to the foresters, the animals endangered traffic safety. They were shot after permission from the authorities. A spokesperson for forestry association Staatsbosbeheer told NU.nl that all three killed animals were pregnant females.

Visiting a Dutch zoo is increasingly expensive, but they are also increasingly popular. Over the past five years ticket prices increased by an average of 17 percent, and visitor numbers at zoos in the Netherlands increased by 11 percent in four years, RTL Nieuws reports based on its own research.

The broadcaster compared the current ticket prices of all zoos affiliated with the Dutch association of zoos NVD to the prices from 2012. On average the ticket price for an adult increased by 3 euros, with outliers of 5 or even 9 euros.

A tornado caused a great deal of damage in the German state of North Rhine-Westphalia on Wednesday. Around the city of Viersen, just across the border of Venlo, multiple homes lost roofs and numerous trees were blown over, NOS reports.

One person was seriously hurt in Viersen and a firefighter was hit by lighting. As far as is known, no one was killed. The tornado lasted almost 15 minutes.

Over the past decades there's been a "dramatic" decline in the number of ground beetles and moths in two nature reserves in the Netherlands, according to Natuurmonumenten. The number of ground beetles declined by 72 percent in Wijster in Drenthe over the past 22 years, and the number of moths by 54 percent in Kaaistoep in Noord-Brabant over the past 20 years, NU.nl reports.

Heavy rains caused many problems in large parts of northern Netherlands on Sunday night. On Twitter local residents complained about flooded streets and buildings, and even water streaming out of the toilet.

Drenthe saw a total of 63 millimeters of rain on Sunday evening, RTL Nieuws reports. Usually the whole Netherlands gets 61 millimeters of rain in the entire month of May.

Dutch parliamentarians are flabbergasted by an incident in safari park Beekse Bergen in Hilarenbeek this weekend. A French family, including a young child, got out of their car to take photos of sunbathing cheetahs and Another visitor to the park filmed the incident and posted it on YouTube.

Swan in Zuiderpark, The Hague

Over the past weeks four swans were found killed in Zuiderpark in The Hague, the police said on Facebook. They're necks were broken. Several swan nests and the eggs in them were also destroyed.

The Zuiderpar police report that the remaining swan nests have now been screened off with fencing as a precaution. The police, along with enforcers and foresters, are also patrolling the area and keeping an eye on the nests.

A video was posted on YouTube showing a family barely escaping aggressive cheetahs after getting out of their car in Dutch safari park Beekse Bergen. The park could not confirm whether the footage is real, RTL Nieuws reports.

The rule in Beekse Bergen is do not get out of your car. But this family seems to have missed that rule.

They parked their car next to sunbathing cheetahs and got out to take some pictures. A small child also got out of the car to peek around the corner. Nothing happens.

Sea sparkle

The calm summer weather in the Netherlands over the past few days, created some fairy tale-like scenes along the Dutch coast. The sea was illuminated bright fluorescent blue in some areas, due to Noctiluca scintillans, more commonly known as sea sparkle, NOS reports. 

Sea sparkle is a unicellular algae species that exhibits bioluminescence when disturbed. This happens most commonly in warm and calm summer weather. This natural phenomenon resulted in some beautiful photos taken along the Dutch coasts over the past days.

After a cool and cloudy Ascension day on Thursday, the weather will clear up and warm up in the Netherlands. Maximums up to 26 degrees are expected for Saturday, according to Weeronline.

Thursday started out rainy in many places in the Netherlands. Weeronline expects that most showers will dry up by late afternoon. Maximums of around 13 degrees along the coast, around 15 degrees in the north, and around 17 degrees in the east can be expected. 

Friday will be a sunny spring day, with maximums ranging between 16 degrees on the Wadden to 20 degrees in the southeast.

People wanting to see the northern lights usually have to go to Northern Europe, but this week this beautiful natural phenomenon is also visible above the northern parts of the Netherlands, RTL Nieuws reports.

The northern lights are hard to see with the naked eye, but show up beautifully on long exposure photos. In the Netherlands the northern lights are only visible a few days per year. The phenomenon is caused by solar wind - bursts of plasma clouds on the sun.

The Netherlands has two more days of summer high temperatures, before the weather cools down again, Buienradar expects. Ascension day on Thursday will be cool, with maximums no higher than 15 degrees.

Tuesday will be a beautiful summer's day. "It is the hottest day of the week, with maximum around 27 degrees. Locally it will be 29 degrees in the southeast", Maurice Middendorp of Buienradar said to RTL Nieuws. Wednesday will also be warm, if more cloudy. Maximum temperatures will range from 23 degrees along the coast to 25 degrees inland.

The blackbird population in the Netherlands is not doing well, according to Sovon bird research. Sovon's interim figures show that 15 percent fewer blackbirds were spotted in the country so far this year, NOS reports.

"We see tens of thousands less than last year. That means that you really hear fewer black birds in the neighborhood", Albert de Jong of Sovon said to the broadcaster.

The blackbird is threatened by the Usutu virus, a virus transmitted by mosquitos. In 2012 this virus led to the deaths of hundreds of thousands of blackbirds in Germany.
