An avalanche in progress

A group of eight snowboarders, most of whom Dutch, were caught in an avalanche near the Austrian village of Obergurgl on Saturday. A 22-year-old man from 's-Gravenzande was killed and two others were hospitalized. Others were unharmed and managed to contact the emergency services, AD reports.

The snowboarders were surprised by the avalanche at an altitude of some 3 thousand meters. They were in Ferwaltal, not far from the ski resort in Obergurgl, Tyrol and were on the way to the top with so-called split-boards.

The Noorderpark pool in Amsterdam-Noord was named the most beautiful pool in the world by Piscine Global in Lyon. Architect Branimir Medic of Architekten Cie. received the award, Het Parool reports.

The jury praised many aspects of the pool, particularly the architecture. "Thanks to the light and airy architecture, the public swimming pool fis perfectly to its surroundings. The wooden structure softens the transition between inside and out, and invites people to enter the gently undulating pavilion, situation in the heart of the park", the jury said.

Autumn weather and leaves on the tracks resulted in fewer trains traveling between Nijmegen and Schiphol and between The Hague and Utrecht on Thursday, NS reports. 

There will be a train on these routes every 30 minutes, instead of the normal schedule of every 15 minutes. Travelers should take extra trael time of around 15 minutes into account. They also may have to switch trains more often. NS thinks the delays will last until 9:30 p.m. on Thursday.

Slick railway tracks caused by fallen leaves and rain resulted in fewer trains traveling on the busy routes between Nijmegen and Schiphol and between Den Haag Central and Utrecht Central, NS warns. Delays can be up to 15 minutes per journey.

Trains with damaged wheels can not travel on slick tracks, according to Het Parool. Damaged wheels skid on slick tracks when a train tries to brake and can lead to significant damage.

Lables saying "sustainably caught" or "caught with respect for nature" on canned tuna are often not true, according to environmental organization Greenpeace on Monday. Tuna are still often caught in a way that is damaging to the environment and other marine animals like sharks, the Telegraaf reports.

The environmental organization looked into seven canned tuna producers in the Netherland to find out which tuna they use and how exactly the fish are caught. Six of the seven producers sell canned tuna that were caught in a way that is damaging to the environment.

Chemical company DuPont apologized for the leakage of hazardous substances on its premises in Dordrecht and for its poor communication about such leakages with local residentsm director Europa Govert Griffioen said to newspaper AD. This is the first time he is substantively talking about two formaldehyde leaks at the company this year.

The Netherlands had its first autumn storm of the season on Sunday. Five people were injured in Arnhem when deck screens were blown over and hit them. And reports of damage came in from accross the country, NOS reports.

Another giraffe was born at Artis zoo in Amsterdam. The baby giraffe came into the world on Wednesday night. Zookeepers discovered him on Thursday morning and are delighted, the zoo announced.

According to Artis, this baby giraffe is a colt and already drunk from his mother. This is the mother giraffe's fifth young and brings the total number of giraffes at the zoo up to 10.

The Netherlands can expect the first autumn weather this week, with low tempratures and even an autumn storm or two, according to Weeronline.

On Thursday motorists will have to deal with strong gusts of wind of up to 75 km per hour and lots of rain during the evening rush hour, according to the weather service. Thursday night there will be storms, especially in the western parts of the country, sometimes accompanied with thunder and hail.

About 60 Dtuch tourists who were stranded in Kaikoura, New Zealand after an earthquake this weekend, are now able to continue their journey. Travel agency Travel Essence arranged a small airplane to pick them up from the coastal town, NU.nl reports.

About 60 Dutch tourists are stuck in the New Zealand coastal town of Kaikoura after an earthquake this weekend completely isolated the town from the rest of the island. The town is only acessible by one road and landslides completely blocked it, a spokesperson for travel agency Travel Essence said to BNR.

All poultry farmers in the Netherlands were ordered on Wednesday to cage and guard all their birds intended for the production of meat and eggs. This precautionary measure was implemented by State Secretary Martijn van Dam of Economic Affairs after highly pathogenic bird flu H5N8 was found in wild birds in Germany, Austria, Hungary, Poland and Switzerland, NOS reports. 

About 10 dead grebes and tufted ducs were also found in the Netherands, near Monnickendam. They died of bird flu, though further study will reveal whether it was subtype H5N8.

Artis zoo in Amsterdam welcomed a brand new resident - a baby giraffe was born at the zoo on Monday afternoon, Artis announced on Tuesday.

The birth of a giraffe happens with the mother standing and can take anything between 30 minutes and an entire day. This birth took about three hours. The foal was born at 4:25 p.m.

The first snow of the season hit the Netherlands on Monday night and during the early hours of Tuesday morning, according to Weeronline. Reports of wet snow or sleet came from Stiens in Friesland and Roodeschool in Groningen. Frost also triggered the first deployment of salt trucks this season, RTL reports.

Temperatures dropped to below zero in large parts of the Netherlands overnight. Gritters were mainly deployed in Noord-Holland, Friesland and Groningen. Roads,b ridges, viaducts and highway ramps may be slippery in these provinces, but also in the rest of the country.

The Netherlands can expect low temperatures more reminiscent of January than early November this week, according to Weeronline. Frost will appear in most places and there may even be some wet snow.

Today there will be a number of showers that can be accompanied by hail. There may be some sunshine during the afternoon, but it will be paired with a cold north-easterly wind. Afternoon temperatures will be around 6 or 7 degrees. Only Zeeland may reach 8 degrees

The Netherlands can expect some wintry weather next week. Weerplaza expects frost every night and if there is rain, it may very well be wet snow, the Telegraaf reports.

Some European countries already had their first snowfall of the season. And while last week the Netherlands still had mild temperatures between 13 and 16 degrees, this weekend the thermometer will barely rise over above 10 degrees. 

Next week will be even colder with an additional charge of cold air heading our way. By mid next week maximum temperatures are expected to drop to only 5 degrees.

The Amsterdam VVD, D66 and SP are investing 3 million euros into a cleaner and safer Amsterdam. "Amsterdam is getting busier, which makes more mess and insecurity on the streets. We want extra money for a cleaner and safer city, on top of the money that is already there", Marja Ruigrok, leader of the Amsterdam faction of the VVD, said to AT5.

1.2 million euros will be used to keep the city cleaner, 1 million to address unsafe situation and another 1 million for extra enforcement capacity.

Between 100 and 200 flights were delayed at Schiphol Airport on Tuesday morning due to fog. The fog means that the distances between airplances on landing and takeoff have to be bigger, leading to delays, ANP reports.

While the delays still seem to be small, the airport warns that they could run up to 30 minutes. Travelers are advised to keep an eye on Schiphol's website for current travel infromation. 

The airport expects that the flight schedule should be back to normal by Tuesday afternoon.

Animal party PvdD wants to close zoos as one point in its campaign for the elections in March next year. According to the party, zoos are no longer of this time and should only be a temporary residence for animals, RTL Nieuws reprots.

The party writes that "exhibiting animals" in too small cages is outdated. In this time animals should live in their original habitat. The PvdD also statest aht the old argument of breeding programs at zoos is no longer relevant. According to the paryt, zoos only breed animals because baby animals attract extra visitors.

Dutch motorists can expect a busy and difficult rush hour this morning due to thick fog in most of the country. Meteorological institute KNMI warns that visitibility may be down to 200 meters in some places.

A code yellow fog warning is currently in effect for all of the Netherlands except the three norther provinces and the Wadden islands. The fog should dissipate during the course of the morning.

Several hundred tourists, including a number of Dutch, have been stranded on the Canary Islands of Lanzarote and Fuereventura since Tuesday. Persistent bad weather in Lanzarote meant that their TUI flight could go no further than Feurteventura, AD reports.

According to TUI, 173 passengers are involved. Their flight to Lanzarote left from Schiphol on Tuesday, but due to bad weather they had to spend the night on the neighboring island.

A group of 40 large Ducth companies called on the next Dutch government to to lay long-term goals of the Climate Agreement down in law. This is the only way to curb global warming, the companies wrote in a letter in the Volkskrant on Wednesday.
