A trio of filmmakers from Amsterdam have attempted to embarrass Russia in a playful satire on Vladimir Putin. The trio planted the Dutch flag on the exact same spot the Russians placed their flag in the North Pole several years earlier. They planted the flag on the exact location where the Russian flag is sitting, under some 4,200 meters of ice.

State Secretary Sharon Dijksma of Economic Affairs is pushing for an international ban on trophy hunting, such as hunting lions or elephants. She is currently investigating the possibilities for such a ban. Dijksma also wants the United Nations to recognize wildlife crime as international crime.

The Netherlands is getting two pandas from China, and without the annual one million dollar fee. The black and white bears will soon be accommodated by the Ouwehands Zoo in Rhenen. According to Minister Bert Koenders of Foreign Affairs, this is "a sign of the special relationship between China and the Netherlands".

Reports from Westkapelle have come through about oil that is washing up along beaches in Zeeland on the Dutch coastline are thanks to sunken Dutch freighter Flinterstar, The freighter collided with another tanker, Al Oraiq,and is stuck just off the coast of Belgium on a sand bank. Even though authorities attempted to build a sandbank around the Zwin Nature Reserve, dozens of meter of beachfront between Westkapelle and Vlissingen have been covered with the spilled oil.

The strongest earthquake of the year struck the Groningen province at 6:05 p.m. on Wednesday, according to Dutch meteorological agency KNMI. The earthquake measured 3.1 on the Richter Scale, with an epicentre near Hellum, about 20 kilometers east of the city of Groningnen.

The Anglo-Dutch oil company, Shell, announced it will be closing down its operations in Alaska’s Chukchi Sea due to the high costs and strict regulations that govern the exploration for oil. Director of Shell Upstream Americas, Marvin Odum reported that the company is disappointed at the exploration results that came from the Burger J exploration well in the region, and will now cease further exploration activity off Alaska's coastline for the foreseeable future.

Armchair and professional astronomers alike were able to witness a total lunar eclipse early Monday morning in the Netherlands despite widespread predictions of cloud cover. The event was dubbed a "Blood supermoon" or "Super blood moon" by some, as the eclipse made the moon appear to take on a deep shade of crimson while the satellite was near its closest approach of Earth for this year.
