The Zeist city council decided to ban the release of balloons in the municipality. According to the council, it only causes litter in the environment. "These balloon remains are eaten by fish, birds and other animals and that causes animal suffering", the council said. RTL Nieuws reports.

The motion was accepted by a large majority on Tuesday evening. Zeist will add the ban on releasing balloons to the city's General Local Regulations.

Schools, businesses and associations will be informed of the ban, and the harmful consequences of releasing balloons, as soon as possible.

The business community will pay their "fair" share in the implementation of the climate agreement, Prime Minister Mark Rutte said during question hour in parliament. The Prime Minister was called to parliament by GroenLinks leader Jesse Klaver. He believes that in the negotiations on the climate agreement the government, like with the scrapping of dividend tax, listened too much to the business community, NOS reports.

A 45-year-old Dutch man died in a skiing accident in France on Monday. The man was skiing outside the designated track with his son and a friend when he was hit by two avalanches. Attempts to resuscitate him were to no avail, the mountain police in Modane, Savoie said to newspaper AD.

While the winter has been pretty mild so far, colder days are ahead, according to Buienradar. The coming nights will all drop below freezing, and there is even a chance of snow from Thursday, Dennis Wilt of Buienradar said to RTL Nieuws. 

"It's getting colder, with a few nights of frost in a row. And that will probably last for a while", Wilt said. "We'll get frost nationwide." There will also be some ice forming on the canals and lakes, but not thick enough to skate on, he added.

Two humpback whales were spotted swimming off the Dutch coast on Thursday afternoon. The first was seen off the coast of Scheveningen, and a second animal was spotted off the coast near Bergen aan Zee, SOS Dolfijn reports.

An adult humpback can grow up to 18 meters tall. The animals are adventurous and can manage well in shallow waters, such as those on the Dutch coast. According to SOS Dolfijn, there is therefore no reason to worry that the two whales are in trouble.

Dutch public works department Rijkswaterstaat is launching an investigation into what consequences small plastic particles that ended up in the Wadden sea after 291 containers fell off a ship in the North Sea last week will have for animals in the area. The investigation will be done in cooperation with scientific institute Waddenacademie in Leeuwarden. The results will also show which measures can be taken so that the Wadden Sea is better protected, NU.nl reports.

Animal Rights released a new video showing abuses on Dutch chicken farms. The video shows bald and weakened laying hens that can hardly walk. It also shows dead chickens in the stables, some in an advance state of decomposition.

This new video was filmed with hidden cameras in Flevoland, Noord-Brabant, Gelderland, Limburg and Vlaanderen, according to L1. The Limburg locations concern stables in Nederweert and Oirlo, the regional broadcaster reports.

Waterboards in the northern parts of the country have started closing dikes as a stormy wind blows across the Netherlands on Tuesday. Meteorological institute KNMI issued a code yellow weather warning for a large part of the country. The strong winds warning is in effect until at least 9:00 p.m.

The Netherlands is facing strong winds on Tuesday. As a result, some flights to and from Schiphol airport may be delayed or canceled, the airport warns. Dutch airline KLM already canceled 159 return flights on Schiphol due to the weather conditions.

A large number of arrivals at Schiphol are already delayed, as is a handful of departures. The cancelations are still mainly KLM flights. The airport urges travelers to check their flight status with their airline or on the Schiphol site or app before leaving for the airport.

Dutch public works department Rijkswaterstaat and shipping company MSC have located around 220 of an estimated 281 containers that fell off ship MSC Zoe in the North Sea last week. Most of the containers, located with the help of sonar boats, are at the bottom of the North Sea, near the Wadden Islands, a spokesperson for Rijkswaterstaat said to NU.nl.

Two men who got stuck in the snow during a ski tour in Davos, Switzerland, were rescued thanks to a call to the Netherlands. The two men could not remember the emergency number, so one of them called his girlfriend in Utrecht, who in turn called the emergency services, NU.nl reports.

The woman got the men's coordinates via a GPS app and then passed it on to the Midden-Nederland control room. The control room passed the information on to Interpol, who sent a helicopter to rescue the duo.

The 21-meter-high Christmas tree currently standing on Amsterdam's Dam Square will be donated to the animals of Artis Zoo after it is taken down on January 8th. The largest piece, 6 meters of trunk including branches, will go to the elephants as a toy, NU.nl reports.

The rest of the Nordmann fir will go to other animals in the zoo, including giraffes, kudus and camels. "For the animals such a tree is behavioral enrichment", a spokesperson for Artis said. "You keep the animals active and healthy by challenging them to show their natural behavior."

The Ministry of Defense deployed 100 soldiers to assist in cleaning up sea containers and their content that washed ashore on the Wadden Islands. Some 270 containers fell from cargo ship MSC Zoe near Germany during the early hours of Wednesday morning. Around 35 containers washed ashore on the Wadden Islands. Friesland and Groningen on the mainland also found containers and their content, NU.nl reports.

The soldiers will start cleaning up the beaches on the Wadden Islands on Friday. Some soldiers had to come back from their Christmas holidays to help, according to the newspaper.

A massive tropical storm is set to hit Thailand on Friday. The Thai weather service fears that it will be the strongest storm in 30 years and expects waves of up to 7 meters high, gusts of over 100 kilometers per hour, heavy rainfall and tidal waves. Hundreds of tourists, including some 40 Dutch, are trapped on the Thai islands, NOS reports.

The new year is starting out cloudy with a chance of rain for the Netherlands. In the course of the afternoon the clouds will clear up somewhat, and especially the north of the country will have some sunshine, according to Weerplaza.

Afternoon temperatures will climb to a mild 9 degrees, though northwesterly wind means that it will feel colder. 

The milder weather is ideal for those taking the New Year's plunge this year. The sea water is also warmer than is usual for this time of year.

A humpback whale was spotted around 2 kilometers off the coast of Scheveningen on Tuesday. This whale has been seen off the Dutch coast multiple times over the past two months, NU.nl reports.

The whale, affectionately called Jojo, often breaks the surface and regularly sprays water into the air. 

The humpback was first spotted off the coast of Texel on October 14th. In the following weeks, the animal was seen multiple times, including near Scheveningen and Egmond aan Zee.

Ten different wolves visited the Netherlands in 2018, Wageningen Environmental Research (WENR) concludes after genetic testing on feces and DNA samples taken from bite wounds in attacked sheep. One she-wolf has been hanging around in the Netherlands for months and may be settling here, NU.nl reports.

Up to August traces of eight wolves were found in the Netherlands. Between August and October, two new females were observed, as well as one she-wolf also spotted multiple times earlier in the year. Wolves were spotted in Friesland, Drenthe, Overijssel and on the Veluwe.

Netherlands residents may wake up to a beautiful purple glow in the sky on Christmas morning. Due to the bitter cold high in the air, pearlescent clouds may form, according to meteorologist Arjan Willemse, RTL Nieuws reports.

"Normally clouds are made of water vapor. Not these clouds. Pearlescent clouds consist of waste products: chlorides that are emitted by us humans. These chlorides are poorly degradable and clump together at extremely low temperatures, which in turn creates pearlescent clouds", Willemse said to the broadcaster.

While the coming days will be colder, there will unfortunately be no snow on Christmas this year, according to Buienradar. The Christmas season will have cloudy, but dry weather with maximums around 6 or 7 degrees Celsius, RTL Nieuws reports.

Astronomical winter in the Netherlands started wet and windy on Friday. This afternoon will be drier in the south of the country, and the southern provinces may even get a glimpse of sunshine. The northern parts of the country can expect rain until the evening. Afternoon temperatures will be a very mild 12 degrees.

For the first time ever, researchers successfully put a fish species on contraception. Dutch biologist Max Janse and vet Henk Luten of Burgers' Zoo implanted a straw full of hormones into an extremely fertile eagle ray, after which she stopped producing offspring. Two years later the researchers published their results this week, NOS reports.
