A sailboat and a tugboat sank at the Botlek bridge near Hoogvliet in Rotterdam at around 7:45 a.m. on Friday. Two people who were on board the sailboat ended up in the water, but have since been rescued, according to the local safety office, AD reports.

The sailboat crew members were fished out of the water by a dinghy that happened to be sailing by. They were checked over by paramedics and did not have to go to the hospital.

The supply of water to the Rijn river that enters at Spijk Nederland dropped below the minimum limit for the month of July, the national coordination committee for water distribution LCW announced. The LCW therefore issued a code yellow, which means that a water shortage may be imminent. The low water level may lead to measures, though what measures exactly is not yet clear, the LCW said, NU.nl reports.

A small earthquake, registering 2.0 on the Richter scale, hit the Drenthe village of Dalen on Tuesday morning. The quake happened at a depth of three kilometers, and was so light that many people did not even notice it, RTV Drenthe reports.

"Gas is extracted near Dalen. We also believe that the earthquake has to do with that", Laslo Evers, seismologist at meteorological institute KNMI, said to the broadcaster. There were previously gas extraction quakes near Dalen in 2000 and 2002.

Households in parts of Friesland, Overijssel and Flevoland may experience low water pressure in the coming days. Water consumption in these areas is currently much higher than normal due to the persistent heat, water company Vitens announced on Tuesday, NU.nl reports.

According to the water company, about 45 percent more water is currently being consumed in Friesland and Overissel than normal.

The Netherlands can expect hot weather again from next week. There is even a 2 percent chance that temperatures could climb to 42 degrees Celsius, according to Weerplaza. That is much higher than the hottest temperature ever measured in the Netherlands - 38.6 degrees Celsius, measured in Warnsveld.

A 24-year-old man was taken from the water at Bogortein on Java island in Amsterdam Oost on Monday. He was resuscitated and rushed to hospital, but passed away. The victim was an exchange student from Ecuador, the Telegraaf reports.

The student was swimming with friends when he disappeared under water. His friends sounded the alarm.

Fire department divers found him quickly and resuscitated him at the scene. He was rushed to the hospital, where he died.

The body of a woman who disappeared while snorkeling in a beach bath on Enodedreef in Nuenen on Sunday, was found by police divers on Monday. The victim is a 49-year-old woman from Eindhoven, the police confirmed on Twitter.

The woman's family was informed about the sad news, the police said.

A fire broke out in the dunes near Heemskerk, Noord-Holland, late on Monday morning. Emergency services are at the scene in large numbers, including dozens of fire trucks. The emergency services deployed en masse, erring on the side of caution due to the drought, a spokesperson for local safety office Veiligheidsregio Kennemerland said to ANP.

A 4-year-old boy who wasin Hooffdorp on Sunday afternoon, passed away later that evening, the police confirmed to RTL Nieuws on Monday.

A swimmer found the boy at the bottom of the lake. Multiple emergency services responded to the scene. 

The child was resuscitated and rushed to hospital, where he passed away.

The first 41 of after an oil spill in the port of Rotterdam three weeks ago, were released again on Saturday. After the oil leak, the swans spent weeks in a temporary shelter on Maeslantkering in Hoek van Holland, being cleaned and recuperating. More swans will be released in the coming weeks, RTL Nieuws reports

A man drowned in Amsterdam, in Hoofddorp a 4-year-old was resuscitated and rushed to hospital after being removed from a lake, a woman disappeared underwater in Nuenen, and two people are missing in Noordwijk.

This concerns the agreement in broad terms, with some concrete goals set and agreements made. The rest will be worked out and finalized later this year. The aim is to implement the Climate Agreement in 2019, NOS and NU.nl report.

The Dutch government no longer wants to take in sick or injured seals, unless they were injured by human action, Minister Carola Schouten of Agriculture, Nature and Food Quality wrote to parliament. She is thereby adopting the advice of a committee that researched seal shelter in the Netherlands. The committee concluded that a 'hands off' approach should apply to sick or stranded seals, and that their care must be more professional, ANP reprots.

After last week's summer high temperatures, the Netherlands can expect cooler and cloudier weather this week, according to Weerplaza.

From Monday maximum temperatures will reach no higher than the low 20s. Maximums of around 19 degrees are expected along the coast on Monday, climbing to around 23 degrees in Limburg.

Cloud cover will increase across the country throughout Monday. There may even be a shower here and there, but no heavy rain. 

From Wednesday temperatures will start to climb again, though there may still be some showers in the east of the country.

The beach in the Zuid-Holland town of Ouddorp is the cleanest beach in the Netherlands this year, according to the annual election by Strand Nederland, Green Deal Schone Stranden, Stichting NederlandSchoon, Koninklijke Horeca Nederland, Blauwe Vlag/Green Key and hospitality magazine Entree, Nu.nl reports.

According to Strand Nederland, Ouddorp managed to convince many beach goers to strive for a coastline without waste. For example, pavilion operators hand out waste bags to beach goers.

Dennis Kramer, a 9-year-old Dutch-Thai boy that lives in Zwolle, wrote a letter to Prime Minister Mark Rutte to ask if the Netherlands can help a young football team and their coach who are stuck in a cave in Thailand.

The 12 boys and their coach went missing in the cave on June 23rd. On July 2nd, they were all found alive, but they are still trapped there by water. The rescue operation is pumping water out of the cave system, but as it is monsoon season in Thailand, this is not having much of an effect.

A video surfaced showing serious abuses at duck breeding companies in the Netherlands, specifically when the animals are being caught and transported. Animal rights organizations are horrified, RTL Nieuws, who published the video, reports.

The video, made by Animal Rights last winter, shows a young duck being stomped to death, ducks being brutally crammed into crates, and being grabbed by their wings and legs. It also shows two employees throwing a young duck between each other in what seems to be a game.

In most cases, animal experiments do not lead to successful treatment for sick people. Many tests are not performed properly, and tests that have already been done are often repeated, according to a study by Radboud UMC Nijmegen, UMC Utrecht and the Netherlands Heart Institute, AD reports.

According to the researchers, data about failed animal experiments are hardly ever published. "Research is then unnecessarily repeated, through which more animals suffer and die", researcher Mira van der Naald said to AD, calling it a vicious circle.

The Dutch Safety Board launched an investigation into an oil tanker colliding with a jetty at the port of Rotterdam on June 23rd. Someafter the collision. The Safety Board will investigate both the cause of the collision, and the control of environmental damage after the oil spill, NU.nl reports.

The Netherlands can expect more dry weather in the coming days. Until the end of next week there will be no, or hardly any, rain, according to meteorological institute KNMI. After that there is a chance of rain, but not enough to end the drought.

The rubber granulate used in artificial turf is harmful to the environment in the immediate vicinity of the fields, according to research by public health institute RIVM and the union of water boards UVW. The rubber granules can leak substances that end up in the soil and dredges around the fields, the researchers found, ANP reports.
