Climate change and particulate matter are the biggest health risks this century, according to a report by 27 global organizations, doctors, academics and policy experts published in medical journal Lancet. The same applies to particulate matter, which in the Netherlands alone caused an estimated 8 thousand deaths, said Peter Blankestijn, one of the Dutch participants in the study, RTL Nieuws reports.

An interim environmental impact report for Schiphol airport is incorrect on a number of important points, according to the authors of a second report drawn up at the request of the airport. Both reports are set to be published on Thursday, NOS reports.

Animal party PvdD will press charges against VVD party leader Klaas Dijkhoff on Tuesday for environmental pollution. Dijkhoff released 500 balloons at a VVD congress in Den Bosch on Saturday, AD reports.

With the release of the balloons, Dijkhoff responded to accusations that he released too many "test balloons" in his political work. He asked the the attendees of the congress to write down political ideas, which were attached to the balloons and released into the air.

Schiphol airport can theoretically grow to accommodating 540 thousand flights per year in 2023, 40 thousand more than is currently permitted, is stated in an interim environmental impact report on the airport that will be published on Thursday, insiders told NOS. The limit is not determined by noise or environmental impact, but by safety, according to the broadcaster.

This week will start out cold and gray in the Netherlands, but warmer weather is ahead. From Wednesday the weather will turn autumn-like. "It can be around 11 to 12 degrees on Thursday and Friday", Buienradar weatherman Arjan Willemse said to RTL Nieuws.

The first snow of the season fell in Drenthe, Overijssel and Groningen on Tuesday evening. According to Weerplaza, it mostly involved wet snow, and not enough to blanket the landscape. 

The winter showers moved across the country during the course of the evening, but stopped by midnight in most places. 

Wednesday will see mainly dry weather, with sunshine every now and then, according to the weather services. Afternoon temperatures will climb to between 3 and 7 degrees.

Anyone complaining about the Dutch weather this winter might have to hold their tongue, as the Netherlands is well on its way to the sunniest year in history. With 11 days left in autumn, the Netherlands has already recorded the most hours of sunshine for the season, according to meteorologists at WeerPlaza and NOS.

Dense fog was expected across much of the Netherlands on Friday morning, predicted to last until 11:00 a.m. The weather condition was expected to drop visibility to under 200 meters everywhere in the country except Limburg, weather agency KNMI said.

The agency put out a Code Yellow weather warning for all other regions, with a caution of dangerous roadways and the possibility that fog could blanket an area quite quickly.

The Netherlands can prepare for a relatively long period of remarkably cold weather, according to Weerplaza weatherman Raymond Klaassen. In the course of next week the temperature will drop to an average that is lower than usual for this time of year, and that chilly period is expected to last until early December, he said to NU.nl.

Good news for everyone going to see Sinterklaas make his national arrival in Zaanstad on Saturday. The weather is expected to be sunny and dry, though a strong and cold east wind means that a warm coat and scarf will be a good idea, Weeronline reports.

Saturday morning will start out foggy, but it should clear up by the time Sinterklaas arrives in Zaandijk at noon. Then it will be sunny "with just a few friendly clouds", according to the weather service. The maximum temperature will climb to around 9 degrees, but due to the wind it will feel around 5 degrees.

This week is starting out rainy for the Netherlands and that could mean a busy rush hour on Monday morning, Weerplaza expects. The weather service expects between 200 and 400 kilometers of traffic jams on Dutch roads. Train traffic may also suffer under the weather, though indirectly through leafs falling on the track.

Highly pregnant cows are slaughtered in the Netherlands several times a week, despite a ban on doing so. This involves cows pregnant with full-grown and viable calves in the 8th or 9th month of their pregnancy, RTL Nieuws reports based on figures received from Dutch food and consumer product safety authority NVWA.

A number of bird species disappeared from the Netherlands over the past decades and more will follow if measures aren't taken, Vogelbescherming said in a new book Bedreigde vogels in Nederland. At least 10 bird species are on the brink of disappearing due to the destruction of their habitats and the decline of insects, NU.nl reports.

A majority in the Tweede Kamer, the lower house of Dutch parliament, supports a proposal by ruling party VVD to build more nuclear power plants in the Netherlands. Opponents worry about nuclear waste and what it will mean for future generations, NOS reports.

The VVD proposal was supported by the VVD, PVV, CDA and FvD. Proponents believe that the Netherlands can not afford to outright reject nuclear energy. But they also point out the disadvantages - nuclear waste, the construction of a nuclear plant is a long process, and it is an expensive source of energy.

Temperatures in De Bilt climbed to 19 degrees on Tuesday, making it the warmest November 6th in the Netherlands since temperature measurements started in 1901. The previous record was 17.1 degrees in 2005. This is the 13th heat record broken this year, Weeronline reports.

Westdorpe and Gilze-Rijen even had official warm days on Tuesday with maximums of 20.4 and 20.0 degrees respectively.

A total of 2,320 red deer currently live in the Oostvaardersplassen, according to a count by forestry association Staatsbosbeheer. Due to the reclassification of the nature reserve, only 490 of them can stay there. The other 1,830 red deer will have to be culled or moved, NU.nl reports.

The province of Flevoland wants to cull the 1,830 red deer, because relocation is too stressful for the animas. Six nature organizations are trying to stop that in lawsuit. The court will rule later on Monday.

Unseasonably warm weather is expected in the Netherlands this week, thanks to mild air from Italy heading our way, according to Weeronline. Tuesday will be the warmest day, with maximums between 14 degrees in the north and 19 degrees in the southeast expected. Locally thermometers may even climb to 20 degrees on Tuesday, the weather service expects.

Remy, a lion cub found dumped in a meadow near Tienhoven last month, is doing really well, according to the foundation that is looking after him. After spending a month in quarantine and getting all his vaccinations, Remy will be moving into his own habitat on Wednesday, Stichting Leeuw said on Facebook.

"He is growing like a reed and is very stubborn and playful", the foundation, based in Anna Paulowna, said.

Hundreds of Barneveld residents are living on polluted ground without knowing it. Over 1,000 tons of contaminated soil was illegally used for two new construction projects in the city, research program Zembla reports based on a report from the Gelderland environmental services.

According to Zembla, a controversial waste processor delivered a total of 10 thousand tons of soil that was heavily polluted with toxic substances styrene and DDT. The company used falsified papers to do this. The pollution in the soil exceeds the legal standards.

Four bears killed a wolf in the Dierenrijk zoo in Mierlo on Monday. Several visitors to the zoo saw the incident happen. Why the bears attacked the wolf is not clear, a spokesperson for the zoo said to Eindhovens Dagblad.

A video shows the wolf being torn apart by three bears. Two other wolves tried to intervene, but were kept at a distance by a fourth bear.

Waterboard Rijn en IJssel expects more drought problems next spring, due to the extremely low groundwater level this year. For the water level to recover sufficiently to avoid dry waterways and irrigation bans, it will have to rain every day for months, Weeronline reports.

Waterboard Rijn en IJssel will use pike to get rid of "illegal" goldfish in Arnhem's newly constructed city stream. City residents released the goldfish in the the stream because they found the new concrete waterway on the boring side, but as goldfish are exotics the waterboard is worried that they will supplant the native fish in the Rijn, ANP reports.

The waterboard is therefore now releasing pike into the Jansbeek, in the hope that the predators will eat the goldfish.

Over the weekend rescue organization for sea mammals EHBZ had to respond twice to dead seals washed up in the Netherlands. Both animals suffocated after getting trapped in plastic waste, the organization said on Facebook. 

One seal washed ashore at Ouddorp in Zuid-Holland. It had a plastic frisbee around its neck. The other seal was taken from the water at Brouwersdam. It was entangled in, and almost decapitated by, a fishing net.

People living around Schiphol airport experience much more noise pollution than Schiphol itself reports, Natuur- en Milieufederatie Noord-Holland said based on its analysis of nuisance experience investigations by GGD organizations in the municipalities around the airport, ANP reports.
