The Netherlands is getting snow on Wednesday and that will have consequences for all forms of traffic. NS is running fewer trains. Schiphol expects flight delays and cancelations. And ANWB expects busier than usual rush hours in the morning and evening. Meteorological institute KNMI issued a code yellow warning for the entire country.

Dutch national railway NS will run a reduced schedule on Wednesday morning with forecasted snow expected to fall across much of the country. Up to 3 centimeters of snow is expected across much of the Netherlands.

The limited train schedule is in place so the NS can quickly respond to problems, and provide more accurate travel information, the railway said. Passengers can expect longer travel times and more crowded trains.

Motorists in the Netherlands are warned to take extra care when commuting to work this morning. The roads may be icy and slick due to wet parts freezing overnight. Meteorological institute KNMI issued a code yellow warning for the entire country, except for the Wadden islands.

"Chance of slickness. All traffic participants may be hindered. Adjust your driving behavior. Follow weather reports and warnings", the KNMI warns. The code yellow warning is in effect until 11:00 a.m. By then the iciness should have melted away.

After a mild weekend, motorists will again have to be careful of icy and slick roads due to freezing night time temperatures this week. There is also an increasing chance of snow from Tuesday evening, Weeronline reports.

Monday will see maximum temperatures ranging between 4 and 6 degrees, usual temperatures for this time of year. On Monday night, minimums will drop to around 1 or 2 degrees Celsius. There is a chance of slick roads due to winter showers.

The Dutch state will not reach its climate- and energy targets for 2020, the Netherlands' environmental assessment agency PBL concluded in its short-term estimate for 2020. The PBL even goes so far to say that the goal to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 25 percent compared to 1990 by next year, as stipulated in the Urgenda ruling, is "out of reach", NU.nl reports.

The Netherlands has a freezing cold night behind it, and another one on the way. Places that got a lot of snow on Tuesday saw minimums drop to below -10 degrees on Wednesday night, according to Weerplaza. The same can be expected on Thursday night.

While the snowfall may be over for most of the Netherlands, roads throughout the country can still be slick due to wet areas freezing overnight and leftover snow. Meteorological institute KNMI issued a code yellow warning for the entire country. 

The code yellow warning is in effect until at least noon. By then most of the iciness on the roads should have melted away, the KNMI expects.

It was a record-setting day in The Netherlands on Tuesday, but in a particularly good way. Traffic jams stuffed up 2,287 kilometers of Dutch roadways, what traveler's association ANWB called a new record.

The jams were nearly double that which was recorded on November 1, the worst date of 2018.

There were over 1,635 kilometers of traffic jams across the Netherlands at 5:05 p.m. on Tuesday, just as the evening rush hour got underway, according to travel association ANWB. A snow storm that started on the west coast in the morning was slowly making its way east, and was still expected to hover over the provinces of Friesland, Groningen, Drenthe, Overijssel, Gelderland, Limburg, and parts of Flevoland and Noord-Brabant past 6 p.m.

The Rotterdam The Hague Airport is temporarily closed on Tuesday due to snowfall. The fire department is at the airport to clear snow off the runways, but did not have much success, a spokesperson said to RTV Rijnmond. The airport will assess the situation again after 2:00 p.m. and decide whether it can reopen.

At least one incoming flight was redirected to Schiphol due to the closure, according to the broadcaster. A few departing flights have been delayed

The first snow of the season started falling in Vlissingen around 8:30 a.m. on Tuesday. "Nicely according to the plans", Weerplaza said. Meteorological institute KNMI expects that around 3 centimeters of snow will fall in the Netherlands on Tuesday, and issued a code yellow warning of icy roads.

NS and ProRail are running fewer trains, Schiphol warns of flight delays, and public works department Rijkswaterstaat expects traffic problems, especially during evening rush hour. Clear skies meant that those who managed to get up early enough got a clear view of the Super Blood Wolf Moon in most of the Netherlands early on Monday morning. The moonlight started changing color around 3:36 a.m., and the total eclipse started around 5:41 a.m., reaching its peak at 6:12 a.m.

The Netherlands is expected to get its first proper snowfall of this winter on Tuesday. This could cause cancellations for flights from, to or through Amsterdam, KLM warns. Heavy traffic is also expected during rush hour on Tuesday morning and evening, NU.nl reports.

This winter's first skating marathon on natural ice will happen in Haaksbergen on Monday night. The ice on skating club IJSCH's rink was between 4 and 5 centimeters thick on Monday morning, thick enough for a marathon, national skating union KNSB announced on Twitter.

The marathon will start at 7:00 p.m. for women and 8:00 p.m. for men. Last year Simon Schouten and Manon Kamminga won the season's first skating marathon on natural ice, NU.nl reports.

Emergency services responded en masse to the marina at the Nederrijn in Wageningen on Sunday after two reports of a rowboat capsizing. Rescue workers searched for possibly missing rowers in the water for hours, but found nothing, De Gelderlander reports.

Motorists in the Netherlands are warned to be careful of slick roads when commuting to work on Monday morning. Meteorological institute KNMI issued a code yellow warning for the entire country. "All traffic participants can be hindered. Adjust your driving behavior. Follow weather reports and warnings", KNMI warns.

Temperatures dropped to between -5 degrees along the coast and -10 degrees inland overnight, freezing wet areas on the roads. The iciness should melt away by 11:00 a.m., according to the meteorological institute.

The municipality of Amsterdam aims to reduce its CO2 emissions by 55 percent in 2030 and 95 percent in 2050, when compared to the emission levels in 1990. The city also aims to be completely off natural gas by 2040. To help achieve this goal, Amsterdam is pushing 150 million euros into a Climate Fund for the period 2019 to 2025, the city announced in a press release.

As Earth’s orbit crosses directly between the Sun and Moon on Monday morning, a total lunar eclipse should be fully visible in The Netherlands. Clear skies are predicted for most of the country from midday Sunday all the way up to about noon on Monday.

If the clouds cooperate, the full eclipse will begin at 5:41 a.m. and maximum coverage will occur at 6:12 a.m. The full eclipse will end about a half-hour later.

Commuters in the Netherlands must be extra careful when driving to work on Friday morning. The roads can be icy due to wet areas freezing overnight, and due to winter showers in the northern and northeastern parts of the country, meteorological institute KNMI warns. 

A code yellow warning is in effect for the entire country, except the Wadden Islands, until 10:00 a.m. "All road users may be affected. Adjust your driving behavior. Follow weather reports and warnings", the KNMI warns.

The Netherlands is in for cold weather in the coming week, with night time temperatures dropping below zero and maximums climbing to only just above freezing. Meteorological institute KNMI issued a code yellow warning for icy roads, starting from Thursday evening. 

Thursday will be partly cloudy with winter showers, which may be accompanied by thunderstorms, according to the KNMI. In the afternoon there is a chance of wet snow. Between the showers, maximums will climb to around 5 degrees. During the showers, the temperature can drop to 1 degree Celsius.

The Zeist city council decided to ban the release of balloons in the municipality. According to the council, it only causes litter in the environment. "These balloon remains are eaten by fish, birds and other animals and that causes animal suffering", the council said. RTL Nieuws reports.

The motion was accepted by a large majority on Tuesday evening. Zeist will add the ban on releasing balloons to the city's General Local Regulations.

Schools, businesses and associations will be informed of the ban, and the harmful consequences of releasing balloons, as soon as possible.

The business community will pay their "fair" share in the implementation of the climate agreement, Prime Minister Mark Rutte said during question hour in parliament. The Prime Minister was called to parliament by GroenLinks leader Jesse Klaver. He believes that in the negotiations on the climate agreement the government, like with the scrapping of dividend tax, listened too much to the business community, NOS reports.

A 45-year-old Dutch man died in a skiing accident in France on Monday. The man was skiing outside the designated track with his son and a friend when he was hit by two avalanches. Attempts to resuscitate him were to no avail, the mountain police in Modane, Savoie said to newspaper AD.
