The Netherlands can look forward to warm and sunny weather next week. Some places may even see the first summer day of the year on Wednesday, with maximum temperatures above 25 degrees, Buienradar expects.

"The barbecue can be turned on and summer clothes taken out", Nicolien Kroon of Buienradar said to RTL Nieuws. "We can almost call it summer, with temperatures rising to locally 25 degrees in the interior from Wednesday! The sun shines brightly, so it's perfect weather to be outside."

The fire department in Zuid-Holland had their hands full with reports of flooded houses and cellars, caused by heavy rains during the early hours of Wednesday morning, ANP reports.

Alblasserwaard, with villages such as Alblasserdam and Molenaarsgraaf, in particular had many problems, local safety office Veiligheidsregio Zuid-Holland-Zuid said to ANP. The control room in nearby Hoeksche Waard also received many calls.

There's a good chance that sand from the Sahara desert will fall on the Netherlands together with rain showers on Monday afternoon and evening, various weather services expect.

A large cloud of sand blew over Europe this past weekend, and is currently hanging above the Netherlands. As long as it remains dry, the presence of the desert sand is only noticeable in unusually colorful sunrises and sunsets, according to Weeronline. But if it starts raining, people in the Netherlands may notice a layer of sand on their cars and garden furniture.

Nearly seven months after wreaked havoc on Sint Maarten, the first financial aid from the Netherlands is heading towards the island. 110 million euros for reconstruction will be released, State Secretary Raymond Knops of Home Affairs and Kingdom Relations announced on Wednesday. The money comes from an aid fund of 550 million euros, which will be managed by the World Bank, NOS reports.

Environmental organization Milieudefensie is filing a lawsuit against Shell in an effort to force the Dutch oil and gas company to adjust its policy to prevent further damage to the climate, Milieudefensie announced in a press conference at Shell's former headquarters in Amsterdam, ANP reports.

Meteorological institute KNMI issued a code yellow weather warning for thunderstorms in the Netherlands on Tuesday afternoon and evening. Storms accompanied by strong winds and hail are expected to cause traffic problems during evening rush hour.

The code yellow warning is in effect for the entire country, starting on the west coast from 4:00 p.m. The storms are expected to leave through the north east of the country around midnight.

Easter bonfires are causing an increased concentration in particulate matter in the air in some parts of the Netherlands, particularly in Overijssel and Achterhoek. "Especially people with lung diseases such as asthma and COPD, and (older) people with cardiovascular disease may suffer", public health institute RIVM warns, NOS reports.

According to the RIVM, the problem lies in the calm weather with not much wind. As a result, smoke and particulate matter can remain in place for a long time. The institute warns people to avoid the smoke as much as possible.

A woman was injured and five people were arrested during a protest at the visitor center of nature reserve Oostvaardersplassen near Lelystad on Sunday. The woman was hurt by a police baton, and the five people were arrested for breaking open a gate at the closed visitor center, AD and ANP report.

After a chilly and wet Easter weekend, the Netherlands can look forward to some spring-like weather. Temperatures will start rising from Tuesday, and are expected to reach as high as 20 degrees by the weekend, Weerplaza reports. 

Maximum temperatures around 10 degrees and showers are expected for Monday. On Tuesday temperatures will rise to 17 degrees, but both Tuesday and Wednesday are expected to be rainy.

Butterflies are still struggling in the Netherlands, according to butterfly foundation Vlinderstichting's annual report. Half of the 47 species the foundation keeps track of is in decline. Since 1992, the number of butterflies in the country dropped by around 40 percent, ANP reports.

Volunteers keep track of butterfly populations on a weekly basis on hundreds of routes in the country. Their observations show that 2017 was a very good year for some species, but dramatic for others.

Xing Ya and Wu Wen, the two giant pandas living in Ouwehands Zoo in Rhenen, met each other for the first time "nose-to-nose" on Wednesday. They seemed to really like each other, the zoo announced on Thursday.

Now that spring has arrived, Ouwehands is preparing the two pandas for mating season. It's an exciting and stressful period, according to Ouwehands. The Wolong Giant Panda Center in China matched Xing Ya and Wu Wen based on herd-book data. "But whether the animals will really like each other, remains to be seen."

A large coalition of parties from various sectors in the Netherlands is calling on the Tweede Kamer to phase out traditional central heating boilers within three years. By 2021 homeowners should only be allowed to replace their central heating boilers with a more sustainable solution, such as a heating pump or a hybrid heating pump, the parties say, NOS reports.

The Netherlands will have fair weather for a large part of Easter weekend, Weeronline expects. There is a good chance of sunshine every day of the long weekend, but also a chance of showers. 

After a wet Wednesday, the weather will clear up for Easter weekend, the weather service reports. Friday morning is expected to be mostly sunny, with some showers in the afternoon. Maximum temperatures will range between 8 degrees on the Wadden and 13 degrees in the south.

Thick fog is expected to cause problems during morning rush hour in almost all of the Netherlands on Monday morning. Meteorological institute KNMI issued a code yellow warning. According to Weerplaza, visibility is reduced to 50 meters in some places.

The Dutch government gave Diederik Samsom the job of making sure that a quarter of Dutch homes are off the natural gas network by 2030, the former PvdA leader said in an interview with newspaper Trouw on Friday. That equates to around 2 million Dutch homes.

Samsom will work as an advisor and commissioner at state energy company EBN, and also as negotiator for the Dutch Climate Agreement. VVD Minister Erik Wiebes of Economic Affairs and Climate asked Samsom to be the negotiator last month, he said.

A baby black spider monkey was born at Artis in Amsterdam on Tuesday afternoon, the zoo announced on Thursday. The newborn monkey is doing well - it has already drunk and is holding firmly to its mother with hands and feet.

The black spider monkey is classified as a vulnerable species, due to the loss of its habitat. Over the past 45 years the the number of spider monkeys decreased by 30 percent. 

Artis now has a total of six spider monkeys, three females and one male. The gender of the newborn is not yet known.

The first peewit egg of the year was found in Giesselanden in Zuid-Holland on Wednesday. The discovery of the first peewit egg traditionally signals the coming of spring and is deeply rooted in Dutch history. 

Andre Hornstra, a volunteer at Nature and Birdwatch Alblasserwaard, found the egg on a pasture in the Botersloot polder and reported it to LandschappenNL at 6:14 p.m. The egg was checked later in the evening, and it was determined to be a fresh egg.

Thick fog can reduce visibility on the roads on Wednesday morning. Meteorological institute KNMI issued a code yellow weather warning for a large part of the Netherlands. 

Visibility may be reduced to less than 100 meters in some places. From 8:00 a.m. onwards the fog should start dissipating. Only Groningen, Drenthe, Overijssel, and Zeeland are not affected by the weather warning.

Despite pleasantly warm weather this past weekend, spring has not yet arrived in the Netherlands. A cold weekend is ahead for the country. Meteorological institute KNMI expects minimum temperatures around -3 degrees on Friday night.

From Friday cold air from the Arctic region will blow into the Netherlands, according to Weerplaza. Rainfall starting on Friday night will gradually turn into snow. Maximum temperatures for Saturday will hover around freezing, KNMI expects.

Bird flu was found at a duck farm on Leidijk in Kamperveen on Tuesday morning, spokesperson Hennie de Haan of the Dutch poultry farmers' union NVP confirmed. "This is horrible news. We were just hoping to be past it", De Haan said to De Stentor.

"I got the news this morning. Usually this is the period that the wild birds fly away and that the avian influenza risk therefor leaves. That is why this news hit so hard", De Haan said to the newspaper. It looks like highly pathogenic variant of the virus, which is very bad for the animals. "But that has not been confirmed yet."
