A new search effort was planned for Monday to find a seal that was apparently lost in inland waters, and trying to make its way back to the North Sea. Experts said it appeared to be a ringed seal native to the arctic waters near Norway.

After four months of re-design and repairs, the plastic collecting boom fo the Ocean Cleanup project is back on the Pacific Ocean between California and Hawaii to clean up the Great Pacific Garbage Patch. A tugboat with the 600 meter long boom departed from the port of Vancouver in Canada late last week, NOS reports.

Meteorological institute KNMI issued a code yellow warning for persistent heat, due to hot weather expected this week. The high temperatures are expected to last until at least Wednesday, and the weather warning therefore remains in effect until then.

The warning applies to the entire country, except for the coastal provinces. Maximums above 30 degrees are expected for Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday, with lots of sunshine, little wind and no rain. Make sure you stay hydrated, keep your home and yourself cool, and avoid strenuous exercise during the heat of the day, the KNMI warns.

Monday will be hot in the Netherlands, with maximum temperatures ranging from 28 degrees on the coast to 33 degrees inland. Some places may even see afternoon temperatures climb to 36 degrees. Public health institute RIVM implemented the 'Heat Plan' in a number of provinces, RTL Nieuws reports.

Sunday night was a so-called tropical night, with minimums not falling below 20 degrees. Monday will get hot quickly. Thermometers in the southeast of the country can reach 30 degrees before noon. Monday night is also expected to be a tropical night.

Over 140 thousand homes in the Netherlands will flood during heavy rain showers. At least 76 thousand other buildings, such as schools and shops, are also at risk of major damage due to flooding, according to research by RTL Nieuws and consultancy and engineering firm Arcadis.

A wolf  pair spotted in the Veluwe at the end of April had three pups, the province of Gelderland announced with video of the pups. According to the province, they were born sometime in April - the first time in 200 years that wolves were born in the Netherlands in the wild.

Time to get out the swim suits and sunscreen. Next week will be hot in the Netherlands, according to Buienradar. There's even a good chance of the first heatwave of the year.

"We speak of a heat wave when there are five days with 25 degrees of higher nationwide, of which there are also three days above 30 degrees", Nicolien Kroon of Buienradar said to RTL Nieuws. According to her, there is a 30 to 40 percent chance of this happening next week.

Multiple fires were caused by lightning strikes while thunderstorms raged across the Netherlands on Wednesday. No one was hurt in the fires. An 18-year-old student was struck by lightning at a military base in Ossendrecht. He was admitted to a burns center in Antwerp with burns and severe damage to his lungs, his school reported.

A lightning strike left 14 military students injured at the army base in Ossendrecht on Wednesday morning. One student sustained serious injuries and was taken to hospital by trauma helicopter. The other 13 were taken to hospital for examination, the Koninklijke Marechaussee said on Twitter.

The students involved are studying the Safety & Craftsmanship course at ROC, according to RTL Nieuws. According to the Marechaussee, the lightning strike happened on a military training ground. 

Exactly what happened, is not yet clear.

Wednesday will be dry and hot in most of the Netherlands, until the afternoon at least. During the afternoon and evening, thunderstorms with hail and strong winds will move happen the country. The southwest of the Netherlands may already see thunderstorms in the morning. Meteorological institute KNMI issued a code yellow warning.

This morning storms entered the southwest of the country from Belgium, bringing with them a chance of hail and wind gusts up to 60 kilometers per hour. The showers will lighten and stop during the course of the morning, according to the KNMI.

The past weeks of rain and storms seem to finally be giving way to more summery weather, according to Weeronline. From Father's Day on Sunday, the weather will turn increasingly sunny and warm, the weather service expects.

Friday will be warm but mostly cloudy, with maximums ranging between 20 and 26 degrees. There is a chance of some sunshine in the afternoon, but cloud cover will increase again by evening, bringing with them showers and maybe even a thunderstorm.

Animal rescuers in Velsen want the public to a better job of safely disposing of their trash. An animal ambulance unit in the Noord-Holland town expressed this on Facebook after they responded to a report of a with its head stuck in an empty bag of Bugles corn chips.

“Our colleague removed the bag from the fox’s head, after which he looked surprised,” the non-profit organization Dierenambulance Velsen said in the post. Reports of animals tied up in trash are relatively common, the group said.

The city of Amsterdam received the go-ahead to substantially increase the amount of wind energy generated in the municipality. The Dutch capital announced plans on Wednesday to add windmills generating an additional 50 megawatts of power by 2026.

Around 50 climate activists from the group Smash Cruiseshit blocked the departure of Dutch cruise ship Zuiderdam from the German city of Kiel on Sunday afternoon, the action group said in a press release. Residents in the Groningen province received a scary start to Sunday morning when an earthquake measuring 2.5 on the Richter Scale shook the ground and rattled windows. The earthquake took place at 7 a.m. with an epicenter located below the small village of Garrelsweer.

"It was a huge bang. For a moment I thought there was a truck on its side," Garrelsweer resident Sibrand Bakker told the Telegraaf.

High winds were expected all day throughout the Netherlands, prompting the fourth straight day of inclement weather warnings from the national meteorological agency KNMI. Operations at Schiphol Airport in Amsterdam showed only a handful of cancellations but dozens of delays.

KNMI issued a code yellow weather alert for Noord-Holland and the Wadden Sea islands, Friesland, Zuid-Holland, Zeeland, and Limburg. Gusts of wind out of the southwest were expected to be between 75 km/h and 90 km/h, the agency said.

An investigation into the use of sustainable fish at high-end restaurants in the Netherlands determined that most served at least one fish item that could have long-lasting negative impact on the ecosystem. The study, carried out by non-profit organization Good Fish Foundation (GFF), found that 89 percent of restaurants use a fish species that is red-flagged on the organization’s sustainability index VISwijzer.

The massive carcass of a whale was found in the Vlissingen port on Friday morning, according to non profit group SOS Dolfijn. When pulled from the water, the whale was measured at 15 meters in length, reported Omroep Zeeland.

The fin whale was believed to be a young male, which are capable of growing to a length of 24 meters, according to the WWF. It was found along the bulbous bow of a ship, though it is not clear what caused the whale’s death.

Meteorological institute KNMI escalated its warning for thunderstorms set to hit the Netherlands this afternoon to code orange. "As the storm front crosses the country, it increases in intensity. That is why a code orange applies", the meteorological institute said.
