Most Dutch largely accept the government's decision to switch to homes that are no longer connected to the natural gas network, but don't take action themselves to achieve it, the social and cultural planning office SCP said in a report on Thursday, NOS reports.

Homeowners are particularly concerned about the affordability and effect of the measures. They are also uncertain about the government's policy in this field and lack knowledge about what will replace natural gas, the SCP said. This makes homeowners hesitant to make the switch, according to the planning office.

Wildlife filmmaker Patrick van Es managed to get the first clear footage of three wolf cubs born in the Veluwe earlier this year. He recorded the cubs last week and posted the footage on Facebook. "We traveled to Yellowstone in the United States multiple times to see wolves in the wild. To be able to admire these animals in our own country now is simply fantastic", he said with the post.

Small, but intense local thunderstorms with hail and strong winds caused nuisance and damage in various places in the Netherlands on Tuesday evening.

Around Leerdam, cars, houses and gardens were damaged by rain and hail, RTV Utrecht reports. A number of trees toppled over across roads and had to be removed by the fire brigade. In Oudewater a scouting club lost their tents thanks to the strong winds. No one was injured.

For nearly 60 percent, saving money is the most important reason to go green, according to a survey by Panalwizard among 1,022 Dutch adults with a rental or owner-occupied home, AD reports.

The Netherlands is officially in its second heat wave of the year. At 12:40 p.m. on Tuesday, temperatures hit 30 degrees in De Bilt, meeting the heat wave criteria of five consecutive days with temps above 25 degrees, including three with temps above 30 degrees Celsius, according to Weerplaza.

Two national heat waves in a year is very rare, according to the weather service. This is only the fourth time it's happened in the Netherlands since temperature measurements started in 1901. The other years with two heatwaves were last year, 2006, and 1941.

So far this year 176 thousand chicken, pigs and cattle were killed in 13 barn fires, according to figures from animal rights group Wakker Dier. That is already far more than the 122 thousand animals that died in 31 fires last year, according to figures from the fire brigade and insurers. Animal rights organizations and coalition party D66 are demanding measures from Minister Carola Schouten of Agriculture, AD reports.

From today the Dutch public can suggest names for the "Dutch" exoplanet that was gifted to the Netherlands by the International Astronomical Union (IAU), to celebrate the union's 100th birthday, the Volkskrant reports. 

The IAU is responsible for, among other things, naming planets and other celestial bodies. To celebrate its 100th year of existence, the IAU "gave" planets to over 70 countries to name. The Netherlands got star HAT-P-6, which is 910 light years away from earth, and the planet that revolves around it, currently known by scientific name HAT-P-6-b.

A total of 2,568 volunteers picked up 10,991 kilograms of waste on Dutch beaches during the North Sea foundation's great cleanup, the foundation announced at the end of the two-week long cleanup campaign on Thursday. Last year, 11,163 kilograms of trash was removed from Dutch beaches, Het Parool reports.

A 67-year-old Dutch man was seriously injured in a fall in the Austrian Alps on Wednesday. There are concerns that the man may now be paralyzed, NOS reports.

The accident happened while the man and his wife were walking near the town of Bludenz in western Austria on Wednesday afternoon. The man fell around 15 meters and landed in a very rocky area, according to the broadcaster.

A doctor who happened to be in the area provided first aid before the Dutch man was airlifted to a hospital in Feldkirch.

A report raising concerns about fire safety and structural integrity of AFAS stadium that was released shortly before the new stadium opened in 2006, was ignored by the Alkmaar city council and office of mayor and aldermen, former alderman Victor Kloos said to De Stentor. 

"We warned about it at the time. In the meantime, I have requested all documents, investigations and reports from that time from the municipality", party leader Kloos of OPA - currently the largest party in the Alkmaar city council - said to the newspaper.

The foundation found 55 different breeds of exotic mammals for sale in the Netherlands, mainly online on Marktplaats and Facebook, but also at pet shops and animal fairs.

Volunteers for the North Sea Foundation's large beach clean-up campaign picked up 2,542 cigarette butts on the beach between Hoek van Holland and Monster on Saturday. The 85 volunteers collected a total of 191 kilograms of waste on this stage of the weeks-long clean-up, NU.nl reports.

The Dutch Safety Board launched an exploratory investigation into the partial collapse of the AFAS stadium's roof during a storm in Alkmaar on Saturday. Football team AZ is also conducting an independent investigation. The stadium is currently inaccessible, which means that AZ can play no home matches at the stadium for the time being, NU.nl reports.

One person was killed, and separately a portion of the AFAS Stadion roof collapsed as heavy winds gripped the Netherlands on Saturday. Wind gusts in IJmuiden, at the North Sea coast, even topped 104 kilometers per hour.

A bicyclist died at about 2:30 p.m. in Linschoten, Utrecht, when the heavy winds toppled a tree, which sent it crashing down on a bike path along the Haardijk. The tree struck the victim, a 58-year-old man from Lopik, a town 15 kilometers away from the accident.

A whirlwind passed across the center of Amsterdam on Friday night, catching many of the city's residents and tourists completely off guard. There were no known injuries in the immediate aftermath, with just a handful of damage reports following the 9:15 p.m. weather incident.
