Monday's heavy snowfall, and the problems in traffic and productivity it caused, cost the Dutch economy around 35 million euros, according to calculations by the Economic Research Foundation and Statistics Netherlands chief economist Peter Hein van Mulligen, BNR reports.

If there is a whole business day in which no work is done in a quarter, like when Christmas falls on a week day, it costs the Netherlands' GDP 0.2 to 0.3 percent of growth, Van Mulligen said to the broadcaster. That amounts to 350 million euros the Netherlands' economy loses out on.

Snowy weather in the Netherlands on Monday resulted in a record number of traffic jams during evening rush hour. At the peak of traffic late in the afternoon, there were around 1,500 kilometers of traffic jams on Dutch roads, according to the ANWB. Taking all roads into account, there was on Monday afternoon.

Snow and ice currently covering the Netherlands will thaw throughout the day, according to weather services Weeronline and Weerplaza. The morning and early afternoon will be mostly cloudy, with showers that may be accompanied by hail. 

Maximum temperatures for Tuesday will range between 2 and 5 degrees. The showers will decrease during the afternoon, and there may be some periods of sunshine. 

During evening rush hour, temperatures will drop to freezing. Weeronline warns motorists to be careful of icy and slippery roads.

All train traffic to and from both Schiphol Airport and Amsterdam Centraal was halted Monday evening as snow continuously fell upon the region beginning just after noon. Hundreds of passengers were stranded at the airport, according to local broadcaster AT5. Large lines formed at the taxi rank there, while wait times for Uber vehicles was in the double digits.

The airport was setting up cots for people forced to sleep at the airport, broadcaster NOS reported.

Due to heavy snowfall expected across the Netherlands this afternoon, many schools decided to give their students the day off on Monday. These include the 23 secondary schools under the ZAAM foundation in Amsterdam and its surrounds, the 4e Gymnasium in Amsterdam, the Amadeus Lyceum in Vleuten, the Coornhert Gymnasiam in Gouda, and the Wellant College in Alphen aan den Rijn, NU.nl reports.

"An email has just been sent from the board that at 1:00 p.m. te doors will close in all schools of ZAAM", an employee of the Amsterdam-Zuid school community said to NU.nl.

The snowy weather in the Netherlands caused fewer traffic problems on the roads than expected on Monday morning. By 9:00 a.m. there were very few traffic jams left on Dutch roads. Public transit across the country was busier than usual during morning rush hour. According to the ANWB, many people listened to advice to stay off the roads, the Telegraaf reports.

The Netherlands was blanketed in snow over the weekend and more snow is expected this afternoon. Meteorological institute KMNI issued a code orange weather warning of extremely dangerous weather. And the Rijkswaterstaat warns people to rather work from home today if possible.

A code yellow weather warning is currently in effect for the entire country. Motorists are warned to to be careful of icy and slippery roads.

Winter weather conditions, including hail, light snow, cold rain, and a late sunrise led to a challenging morning rush hour in the Netherlands on Friday. Over 120 kilometers of traffic jams had already formed on Dutch highways by 8:45 a.m., according to driving association ANWB.

A code yellow weather warning was issued for the entire country due to potentially slippery conditions. The morning warning was set to expire at noon, but a second caution was to begin at 5 p.m. and last through to 11 p.m.

Everyone celebrating Pakjesavond in the Netherlands this evening, can look forward to not doing so in the rain, according to Weeronline. This evening is expected to be cloudy, but dry with mild temperatures ranging between 6 and 8 degrees Celsius.

A 66-year-old woman from Doesburg was rushed and injured by a Scottish Highlander cow while walking in the Posbank nature reserve a few weeks ago. The cow left her with a deep cut in the stomach, that is still undergoing treatment. Natuurmonumenten will reimburse the woman for all damages she suffered, forester Jeroen de Koe said, according to NOS. "It is our animals and it is our responsiblity."

On Wednesday night the police rescued a woman in labor from a kilometer-long traffic jam on the A10 around Amsterdam. With the help of the police, an ambulance was called in, which took the woman and her husband to a hospital in time to have their baby, the police said on Twitter.

The couple was on their way to the hospital when they got stuck in traffic, caused by several accidents, according to RTL Nieuws.

After the ambulance had taken the couple to hospital, the police's transport service drove their car to them.

A 64-year-old man from Roermond and a 67-year-old Belgian woman were killed by an elephant in Zambia earlier this month. It happened in a flash, the Dutch man's daughter, who saw it happen, said to De Limburger.

Wim van Griensven was visiting Zambia with his good friend from Belgium Sabine Goossens, his daughter Ellen and her boyfriend Erik. They were staying in the Maramba River Lodge in Livingstone when they saw two elephants around 70 meters away on November 12th. Ellen, her father and Sabine walked closer.
