Three visitors to the Alrijne Hospital in Leiderdorp were hurt on Thursday after a decorative tree fell on them in the restaurant. The tree is about 4 meters tall, with a real trunk, but fake leaves, NU.nl reports.

The hospital could not say anything about the severity of the victims' injuries, but told NU.nl on Thursday that they were all likely to be discharged by Thursday night. The incident happened at around 2:00p.m. in restaurant Sante.

There are major problems at prison hospital JCvSZ in Scheveningen. The medical disciplinary committee received multiple complaints, the hospital received internal warnings about hygiene, and prisoners have taken to writing letters about their treatment. "Of course we are all prisoners, but this is not human", one detainee wrote, De Gelderlander reports.

In open letters, five detainees in JCvSZ complain about poor medical supervision, receiving incorrect medication, black mold on the walls, and a lack of activities. "We are sometimes under lock and key for 23 hours a day."

A total of 273 deceased people donated their organs last year and 2,398 people donated tissue, according to preliminary figures from Dutch transplant foundation NTS. In total 815 organs were transplanted, an increase of 15 percent compared to 2017, NOS reports.

Hospitals of the Noordwest Ziekenhuizgroep canceled all surgeries and appointments for the time being due to a major computer outage, the organization announced on its website. Patient records are not accessible due to the outage, NU.nl reports.

All appointments at outpatient clinics and supporting departments like radiology and the laboratory are canceled. The hospitals can not call patients to cancel the appointments in person, because their contact details are recorded in the inaccessible patient records.

Last year there were 769 incidents in the Netherlands in which a medicine was temporarily or permanently unavailable, an increase of 5 percent compared to the year before, according to pharmacists' organization KNMP. In 2017 the medicine shortage increased by 3 percent, the Telegraaf reports. 

"It is mopping with the tap open. Patient and pharmacist struggle with this enormously every day. The patient is regularly given another box because the pharmacist has to move to an alternative. KNMP chairman Gerben Klein Nulent said to the newspaper.

The Eye Hospital in Rotterdam treated eight people with fireworks injuries over New Year's. About half of the injuries caused permanent damage, the hospital announced, NU.nl reports.

The number of victims is about the same as last New Year's, though the injuries are somewhat more serious than in previous years, doctor Tjeerd de Faber said to the newspaper. The youngest victim is 15 years old.

"The most injuries were caused by legal fireworks. Half of the victims were bystanders and were hit by flying fireworks", Faber said.

A 12-year-old boy was hurt on Friday when he fell off a footbridge and landed four meters below in a cave. The accident happened at an old bat cave at the Diergaarde Blijdorp, the zoo in Rotterdam.

Rescuers already at the zoo were able to retrieve the boy. He was in a stable condition, an emergency services spokesperson told Nu.nl. His injuries were not disclosed.

It all happened around 2 p.m. when the boy wanted to give his grandmother a scare at the site. He crept out onto a walkway that is open to the public, and ended up slipping off the footpath.

Mayor Marc Witteman of the municipality of Stichtse Vecht in the province of Utrecht passed away on Monday night from the effects of lung cancer. He was 57, the municipality said on Facebook.

Witteman announced in April last year that he was diagnosed with cancer. He continued working as mayor for almost 18 months until his health forced him to step down on August 1st. Yvonne van Mastrigt took over as acting mayor.

A Dutch pre-teen is winning high praise around the Netherlands for racing around the country to play the piano in a fundraising effort. Bas Schipper set a record by playing all the pianos located at 16 different train stations in 18 hours and 10 minutes, breaking the previous record set by Ernesto Dennis by 75 minutes.

In doing so, he managed to raise €61,835 for diabetes research, as of Monday afternoon. The total far exceeded the goal the boy set.

A fire broke out at Nijmegen healthcare institute De Velechting on Wednesday morning. Part of the building was evacuated. Eight residents were hospitalized as a precaution, De Gelderlander reports.

The fire department responded to the building on 73ste street at around 6:00 a.m. About an hour later, local safety office Veiligheidsregio Gelderland-Zuid reported that it had been extinguished. The cause of the fire is not yet clear.

The Dutch Health Council wants the government to add the vaccination of 14-year-olds against Meningococcus C and W to the National Vaccination Program. The vaccination of 14 month old toddlers against the bacteria is already part of the national program, but the Health Council thinks that also vaccinating teenagers will add to group immunity, RTL Nieuws reports.

The OLVG in Amsterdam will be implementing a complete smoking ban at all its locations, both inside and outside, on July 1st next year. In this way the hospital wants to contribute to public health, because cigarettes are not only dangerous for smokers, but also for passive smokers, AT5 reports.

Nearly all the people who were injured by fireworks last New Year's were boys of an average age of 15 years, Erasmus MC reports on the basis of 63 victims admitted to 12 hospitals in the southwest of the Netherlands over New Year's. Most of the victims were injured by firecrackers, AD reports.

The hospitals collected data from 54 of the patients, including the type of injury, how it happened and the treatment. Almost half of the injured were bystanders and 22 percent were hurt by illegal fireworks. 50 of the 54 injuries were caused by firecrackers.
