Two boys with behavioral problems managed to slip away during school hours to go swimming, because of insufficient supervision by the staff of a school and a youth care institution in Zetten in Gelderland, three inspectorates concluded after investigation. As a result, one of the boys drowned in the Rhine river in May last year, NOS reports.

The Dutch government plans to hold so-called smoke-free cigarettes to the same rules that apply to ordinary tobacco products. State Secretary Paul Blokhuis of Public Health is implementing an age limit and a ban on advertising on these products, NU.nl reports. 

"Around this type of product is often the image that they are a smart alternative to ordinary smoking", Blokhuis said. According to him, that idea is misplaced, "because you can become mortally ill of it."

People in the Netherlands often do not get the care they need and are entitled to, National Ombudsman Reinier van Zutphen said in a report about the new healthcare system introduced in the Netherlands in 2015, NOS reports.

The new system gave municipalities more responsibilities when it came to healthcare. The idea behind that was that municipalities know their residents better than the national government, and therefore would also know better what care their residents need.The intent was to make healthcare more accessible and more customizable.

Eight people fell ill for unknown reasons on board a Transavia flight from Schiphol to Antalya in Turkey on Sunday morning. The pilot made a precautionary landing in Vienna after people started fainting on board, NOS reports.

Passenger Hetty Roelofsen told NOS that the problems started when one passenger smelled something strange and fell ill. After that a total of eight people became unwell, spread over te plane.

At least dozens of Dutch homes are located too close to underground high-voltage cables, RTL Nieuws reports based on its own research. The Dutch Health Council has indications that children who live close to these cables have a higher risk of leukemia.

A baby was born in Bakery Risseeuw in Hulst on Monday morning, shortly after the mother went into cardiac arrest. The mother was resuscitated. Both she and the child were rushed to hospital, AD reports.

The pregnant woman became unwell in the bakery on Stationsweg around 10:30 a.m. Emergency services responded in large numbers. The mother was resuscitated and the baby was brought into the world through a caesarean section.

The Netherlands is immediately withdrawing from an international committee that gives the tobacco industry advice on measuring nicotine, tar and carbon monoxide in their products, according to newspaper Trouw.

The national institute for public health RIVM and the Dutch food and consumer product safety authority NVWA believe that the tobacco industry has too much influence on the committee, and therefore decided to withdraw. According to the newspaper, eight of the 10 members in the Dutch committee come from the tobacco industry.

The percentage of Dutch 15 year olds not living with both their parents increased from 20 percent to 30 percent between 1997 and 2017. Children of unmarried parents are more likely to see their parents separate than kids of married parents, Statistics Netherlands said in its report New Families, released on Monday.

The reason for the vast majority of 15 year olds not living with both parents, is divorce or separation. Less than 5 percent of these teenagers don't live with both parents due to the death of one or both parents.

The number of kids in the Netherlands receiving treatment or aid from youth care increased significantly over the past two years. In 2015, when Dutch municipalities took over the responsibility of youth care, there were 349 thousand kids in youth care, last year there were 392,500, according to figures from Statistics Netherlands, RTL Nieuws reports.

Mayor Hanne van Aart of the Noord-Brabant village of Loon op Zand resuscitated a man during the village's King's Day festivities on Friday morning. The traffic controller fell unconscious, and Van Aart provided first aid until emergency services arrived, AD reports.

The man regained consciousness and was rushed to the hospital.

The Red Cross advices King's Day celebrators drinking alcohol to remember to also eat well. Every year Red Cross first aid workers treat many people who get into trouble due to alcohol consumption in combination with little food and fatigue, the Telegraaf reports.

The aid organization also advises partiers to wear comfortable shoes on King's Day to prevent blisters.

There will be first aid posts at most events throughout the Netherlands, for people who do need help. The Red Cross is present in Amsterdam, Rotterdam, Utrecht and Den Bosch, among others.

Over the past year multiple elderly people were abused in nursing home De Leeuwenhoek in Rotterdam by staff and fellow residents, Trouw reports based on witness testimony and supporting documents.

The abuse ranges from verbal aggression to physical violence, according to the newspaper. An anonymous source also told Trouw that staff steal from the elderly residents and that the residents sometimes don't get the medicine they need.

The death of an employee in psychiatric clinic De Kijvelanden last year, was the result of a too high workload and staff shortages, the Inspectorate for Justice and Security concludes in a draft report on the incident. There was also too little supervision on the use of medicines and the rules on letting patients use dangerous objects were not followed, the report reads, RTL Nieuws reports.

Residential care complex Fermate on Handellaan in Zwolle was partially evacuated on Monday after a fire broke out. Firefighters are at the scene in large numbers, because there are many elderly people in the building, the local safety office said to ANP.

How many people were evacuated from their homes is not yet clear. They were taken to a nearby school. So far no injuries were reported.

The fire was noticed around 1:00 p.m. What caused it, is not yet clear.

The government is threatening to fine health insurers that don't do their utmost to shorten waiting lists for mental healthcare, State Secretary Paul Blokhuis of Public Health said to the Volkskrant.

This is one of the measures Blokhuis has planned to tackle waiting lists in mental health care. Others include asking patients to be more assertive, and making it possible to place care providers under stricter supervision.

"This afternoon we heard the terrible news that our mayor Pieter Smit died of cardiac arrest. We lost our mayor, a beloved man. But his family lost their husband and father", the municipality of Oldambt said on Twitter.

Dutch healthcare authority NZa has until January 1st to determine which nursing homes in the Netherlands are the best, and these will serve as the norm for all nursing homes in the country, Minister Hugo de Jonge of Public Health wrote in a report on improving nursing home care, NOS reports.

The Rotterdam police surprised the children in the Sophia Children's Hospital on Sunday by dropping off dozens of balloons shaped like Spongebob, Piglet and Nintje, among others. 

The police seized the balloons from a man who was selling them illegally. In consultation with the Public Prosecutor, the police decided to repurpose the balloons to put a smile on the faces of kids admitted to the Sophia Children's Hospital.
