McDonald's in the Netherlands plans to get rid of all plastic straws with their drinks from next year. What they will be replaced with, is still being decided, RTL Nieuws reports.

The Dutch branch of McDonald's is currently looking at how tests go in other countries before deciding on what alternative to go for. "You can think of straws made of paper or no straw at all", a spokesperson said to the broadcaster. "Think of a tute like with coffee cups."

The company plans to choose its alternative by the end of the year.

German supermarkets removed tens of thousands of Dutch eggs from themselves because they were found to be contaminated by toxic insecticide fipronil. The German Ministry of Agriculture says that there is no danger to public health, NOS reports.

It involved around 73 thousand eggs from an organic chicken farmer in the Netherlands. They were delivered between May 17th and June 4th and were sold in six states all over Germany. Some of the eggs were already sold to consumers before the contamination was discovered.

Meat prices in the Netherlands increased significantly last year. On average meat was 3.8 percent more expensive in 2017 than in 2016, the biggest price increase since 2001, according to figures Statistics Netherlands published on Thursday.

The price of poultry increased the most during the past year, with 4.7 percent. Pork and meat products like smoked, dried or salted meat were 4.2 percent more expensive. The price of mutton and goat meat increased by 3.3 percent, and beef was 2.7 percent more expensive.

Eggs from a chicken farm in Tilligte, Overijssel were found to contain toxic pesticide fiprionil. As a result of this contamination, the farmer's over 3 thousand chickens were killed or taken away. His stock of some 45 thousand eggs was also destroyed, De Gelderlander reports.

This is the second time in less than nine months that this farmer was hit by such a disaster, according to the newspaper. The first time was in mid-August last year.

"We didn't invent the simple solution", Samallo said. "The Digital Festival in Amsterdam hasn't served meat in three years. We are now also taking our responsibility."

The Dutch food and consumer product safety authority NVWA closed restaurant Kam Yin on Warmoesstraat in Amsterdam after a customer found a cockroach in his soup, AT5 reports.

The customer in question got the soup as a takeaway on Saturday and found the bug when he got home. He , after which NVWA inspectors visited the restaurant.

A Baskin-Robbins store in the United States

American ice cream chain Baskin-Robbins is coming to the Netherlands. The first Dutch store will open late in April. Exactly where this store will be, will only be announced later, ANP reports.

A second and third Baskin-Robbins store will open before the end of the year. In the coming years the chain wants to expand to 10 to 15 stores in the Netherlands. 

In addition to ice cream and milkshakes, the Baskin-Robbins stores will also sell ice cream cakes, hot drinks and pastries. The chain also wants to sell its products in Dutch supermarkets, according to the news wire.

Restaurants, bars and cafes in the Netherlands may no longer have smoking areas, the court in The Hague ruled on Tuesday in a lawsuit filed by non-smokers association Clean Air Nederland (CAN), RTL Nieuws reports.

The Netherlands banned smoking in restaurants and the like in 2008, but added an exception for specially designated smoking areas that must comply to certain rules. The court now ruled that this exception for smoking rooms is contrary to the World Health Organization's rules on combating tobacco use.

Jumbo's Goudeerlijk cornbread won the 'Gouden Windei' award as the most misleading product of the year, food watchdog Foodwatch announced on Friday. According to the watchdog, this cornbread is baked without cornmeal and only contains corn pieces for decoration. The corn-yellow color is created by adding the spice turmeric, ANP reports.

The NVWA must pay back the damages poultry farmers suffered due to this crisis, according to LTO. Inter Scaldes is the third restaurant in the Netherlands to get 3 Michelin stars, joining De Librije in Zwolle and De Leest in Vaassen, both of which managed to hold on to their three stars over the past year, NU.nl reports. 

No restaurants in the Netherlands were awarded their second star this year. The Duchess, Le Restaurant and The Whiteroom in Amsterdam, AIRRepublic in Cadzand, Fitzgerald in Rotterdam, and Vista in Willemstad all got their first star.

A ginger cat was caught taste-testing donuts in a Jamin store on the Rokin in Amsterdam on Saturday night. VVD city councilor Tjakko Dijk noticed the remarkable display as he walked by, recorded it and posted a video on Twitter.

The video shows the self satisfied cat going to town on a pink donut. Dijk wondered what the Dutch food safety authority NVWA would say about that.
