Jumbo's Goudeerlijk cornbread won the 'Gouden Windei' award as the most misleading product of the year, food watchdog Foodwatch announced on Friday. According to the watchdog, this cornbread is baked without cornmeal and only contains corn pieces for decoration. The corn-yellow color is created by adding the spice turmeric, ANP reports.

Of the 15 thousand people who participated in this public election, 31 percent voted for Jumbo's corn bread.

Agricultural organization LTO Nederland is threatening to take Dutch food safety authority NVWA to court over the fipronil contaminated egg scandal earlier this year. The NVWA must pay back the damages poultry farmers suffered due to this crisis, according to LTO. So far 120 poultry farmers joined this action in claiming damages around 50 million euros, RTL Nieuws reports.

Inter Scaldes in Kruiningen was awarded a third Michelin star at the presentation of the stars in Amsterdam on Monday. Inter Scaldes is the third restaurant in the Netherlands to get 3 Michelin stars, joining De Librije in Zwolle and De Leest in Vaassen, both of which managed to hold on to their three stars over the past year, NU.nl reports. 

No restaurants in the Netherlands were awarded their second star this year. The Duchess, Le Restaurant and The Whiteroom in Amsterdam, AIRRepublic in Cadzand, Fitzgerald in Rotterdam, and Vista in Willemstad all got their first star.

Consumers association Consumentenbond is very critical about the freshness of shrimp sold in Dutch supermarkets Albert Heijn, Jumbo and Lidl. Jumbo's shrimp also contains more preservatives than is permitted by Dutch law, according to the association, NU.nl reports.

A ginger cat was caught taste-testing donuts in a Jamin store on the Rokin in Amsterdam on Saturday night. VVD city councilor Tjakko Dijk noticed the remarkable display as he walked by, recorded it and posted a video on Twitter.

The video shows the self satisfied cat going to town on a pink donut. Dijk wondered what the Dutch food safety authority NVWA would say about that.

The majority of children under the age of 13 in the Netherlands eat less fruit, vegetables and fish than the Nutrition Center recommends, according to a health survey by Statistics Netherlands in collaboration with the RIVM and the Nutrition Center. In the period between 2014 and 2016 less than four in ten children ate enough fruit, just over four in ten ate enough vegetables, and little more than half ate enough fish.

The health survey is annually conducted among around 1,100 children. Researchers question the kids' parents about the food they eat.

De Librije restaurant in Zwolle is back on the number one spot of Lekker 500's top restaurants in the Netherlands. Last year's number one, Inter Scaldes in Kruiningen, came in second place this year, NOS reports.

The rest of the top five consists of Ciel Bleu in Amsterdam, De Leest in Vaassen and FG Restaurant in Rotterdam.

In the second quarter of this year, Dutch ordered a total of 440 million euros worth of meal deliveries, according to a report by ABN Amro. Pizza is the most popular delivered food, followed by grill dishes, fast food and sushi, AD reports.

On average, Dutch spend 11.40 per person per order. Sushi and other Japanese dishes are most expensive, at 17.96 euros per meal. Ordering a pizza for delivery costs an average of 9.57 euros per person.

The Sinterklaas parade in Gouda this year will include a gluten-free Zwarte Piet. This Piet will hand out gluten-free sweets to children with gluten intolerance. A green flag with the gluten-free logo will be strapped to his back so that he is easy to recognize, AD reports.

The number of people falling ill in the Netherlands after eating wild mushrooms, increased sharply in 2017. So far this year, the National Poisoning Information Center received 182 questions from medical care providers about mushroom poisoning, compared to 137 in all of last year, NU.nl reports.

Dutch food and consumer product safety authority NVWA will get an extra 25 million euros next year due to concerns about the authority's capacity following the fipronil contaminated egg scandal, according to RTL Nieuws. The government will announce this extra investment on Budget Day, sources told the broadcaster.

This extra 25 million euros comes on top of the NVWA's current budget of over 300 million euros. According to RTL, the money will be used to hire more food inspectors and to replace outdated computer equipment.

By the end of next year, Dutch soft drink producers will stop selling sugar-filled soft drinks at high schools in the Netherlands, Raymond Gianotten, director of the Dutch Association for Soft Drinks Waters and Juices, said to RTL Nieuws. By the end of 2018, only light variants of soft drinks will be available at high schools.

"We want to help young people make a healthier choice", Gianotten said. "There are still some ongoing contracts, but as far as we are concerned, this will be done as soon as possible."

The fipronil contaminated egg scandal is spreading to more and more countries. Since it was discovered that the toxic pesticide was used illegally in the Netherlands and Belgium a few months ago, 45 countries found fipronil in their eggs and egg products, the Telegraaf reports.

Of the 28 EU member states, 26 reported finding fipronil in their eggs and egg products, European Commissioner Vytenis Andriukaitis of Health and Food Safety said on Tuesday. Only Lithuania and Croatia haven't reported finding the pesticide.

The parliamentarians have nothing good to say about the NVWA's actions in dealing with millions of Dutch eggs being contaminated by toxic insecticide fipronil. In summary, the MPs accused the NVWA of not communicating well, not responding adequately to an anonymous tip about the contamination and having an inadequate setup to deal with such a crisis, NU.nl reports.

Thirteen supermarket chains affiliated with Superunie quietly recalled waffles and cookies from their shelves on Wednesday because they contain toxic insecticide fipronil, AD reported on Thursday. An article about the ham in an April issue of Allerhande showed a picture of pigs in a meadow, while the Albert Heijn serrano ham pigs spend their entire lives in a small stable surrounded by their own poop, according to the organization, RTL Nieuws reports.

A "scarily high" 31 percent of sushi meals that are delivered to customers' homes contain too much bacteria, according to consumers association Consumentenbond. This is caused by poor hygiene in the preparation of the meals, the association concludes after testing 160 sushi samples from 20 restaurants in five cities, NU.nl reports.

Poor hygiene standards include using dirty cutting boards and employees not washing their hands before working with the food. In many cases the delivered sushi was fresh, the Consumentenbond added.
