The many years long renovation of the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam is finally done. The Philips Wing adjacent to the main building has also been renovated and will be open to the public from November 1st.

An Amsterdammer would not startle when finding a cat roaming around their legs in a cafe. For many years, cats have been an integral part of the local colour, ridding premisses of pesky vermin and providing comfort to the regulars. However well known Nieuwmarkt spot Cafe ‘t Loosje has received word from the Dutch Food and Consumer Product Safety Authority (NVWA) that their beloved cat Smokey can no longer remain on the premises. Outraged by the order, employee Marie Boudri started an online petition which is receiving considerable community support.

Coffeelicious in Dordrecht has been awarded first place the Misset Koffie Top 100 coffee rankings, which judges the best coffee companies from across the Netherlands. The judged said of this years winner that Coffeelicious gave customers a whole round traditional coffee experience.

A member of the notorious Italian 'Ndrangheta' mob has been arrested in a large-scale sting operation directed at mafia operations in Europe. The 46-year old Marc B., who runs a restaurant in Amsterdam, was arrested in February on suspicion of involvement in the mafia, including the delivery of cocaine to the Ndrangheta, De Volkskrant reports.

Supermarkets in The Netherlands are still, despite promises to change the situation, selling broiler chickens. Animal rights organization Wakker Dier reports that most supermarket stalls are still full of factory farm chicken meat.
