At long last, fans of Rotterdam's most famous football team have a new way of replacing their fire extinguishers manufactured by Dutch firm Ajax. The Feyenoord football club has given permission for its name and red-and-white color scheme to be used as branding on new pieces of firefighting gear to take the spot of those proudly bearing the Ajax name.

Ajax, now owned by Chubb, has produced fire extinguishers in Amsterdam for over 100 years. Of course it also happens to share the brand name with Amsterdam's top football club, the arch-rival of Feyenoord.

The little black rhino born at Diergaarde Blijdorp in Rotterdam finally made its first public appearance last Thursday. Born a day before Christmas Eve, the female calf spent its first ten days in its stall before venturing out on the zoo grounds.

The girl was allowed to explore the outdoors under the surveillance of its mother Naima.

Naima and male rhino Vungu were brought to the zoo in Rotterdam back in 2013. At the time, they were the first black rhinos to roam the zoo in over 50 years.

In 2017 the Dutch traveled more than in 2016, especially abroad, a new study from NBTC-NIPO shows. The research, on behalf of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, said that more than 13 million Dutch, 82% of the total population, went on holiday at least once during 2017. That's around 250,000 more compared to 2016.

Last year 16.8 billion Euros were spent in total on holidays in and out of the Nehterlands, which is 1 billion Euros more than 2016.

The Van Gogh Museum closed 2017 with a new record of 2.26 million visitors, which makes it the most visitors in the Netherlands. "This milestone shows that Van Gogh still inspires an uncountable number of people from the whole world. That is fantastic", Axel Rüger, director of the museum, told Het Parool.

There was also an increase of almost four percent in the number of people in possession of the Museumkaart in 2017. Sone 1.35 million people now have a Museumkaart and the cards were used a total of 8.7 million times, an average of 6.6 times per person.

Transavia took down a video it uploaded to YouTube after the airline was accused of plagiarizing the work of a Dutch model. The videos are supposedly too similar to the videos of YouTuber .

Tim Hofman, a BNNVARA host and Korpershoek friend, wrote several tweets late on Thursday where he accused Transavia of replicating his pal's work. "To copy each and every format of independent content makers is just odd, man" he wrote.

A total of 434 people were treated for fireworks related injuries at the emergency rooms of Dutch hospitals over New Year's, a decrease of 8 percent compared to the year before. The number of victims under te age of 15 increased from 99 last year to 119 this year, according to a joint study by VeiligheidNL and broadcaster NOS.

During the run up to New Year's Eve and a few days after, over 53,000 complaints were reported to a devoted to logging fireworks nuisances in the Netherlands. The registration had a 10 percent increase in complaints over a year ago, suggesting that either people are more frequently annoyed by fireworks, or more people know about the website created by 30 local GroenLinks party factions.

Dutch rapper Boef apologized for calling three women who gave him a lift on New Year's morning 'whores' in two vlogs, NOS reports.

The 24-year-old man, real name Soufiane Boussaadia, got a flat tire on New Year's morning and then got a lift from three women. In a video posted on Snapchat about the experience, Boef called the women 'kechs', which means whores in Dutch street language, according to the broadcaster.

New Year's celebrations with fireworks in the Netherlands generally go hand-in-hand with dozens of firework related injuries, and this year was no exception. The Eye Hospital in Rotterdam already admitted eight people with a total of 10 injured eyes. And dozens of people were admitted to hospital with burns and other firework related injuries.

At midnight the Netherlands welcomed 2018. Thousands of people attended firework shows in Rotterdam, Amsterdam and The Hague, despite the rainy and windy weather. A few fireworks shows had to be canceled due to the weather conditions, NU.nl reports.

The National Fireworks show on and around the Erasmus Bridge in Rotterdam continued without too many adjustments, according to the newspaper. An estimated 60 thousand people came to watch the fireworks.

A Winter Circus show in Apledoorn ended abruptly on Wednesday after two performers were injured during the 'Wheel of Death' act. One performer was taken to hospital by ambulance, the other to a doctor's office for treatment, AD reports.

The Wheel of Death is a large metal platform with a large wheel at either end, which is hoisted into the air by cables. Two performers do tricks in the wheels and across the platform.

Nieuwsuur presenter Joost Karhof died unexpectedly on Tuesday, his employer NOS announced. The 48-year-old man became unwell at home and died in the ambulance on his way to hospital.

Karhof was best known for presenting current affairs program Nieuwsuur. He also regularly presented NPO Radio 1 Nieuws & Co as stand-in for Lara Rense. Karhof presented the Grote Geschiedenis Quiz, the Great History Quiz in English, on several occasions and worked as replacement for Matthijs van Niekerk on De Wereld Draait Door on Mondays.

3FM's annual Christmas fundraiser Serious Request raised 5.02 million euros by the time the Glass House in Apeldoorn closed on Sunday. This amount may still increase, as some fundraising actions are still ongoing, NOS reports.

The money raised this year is going to the Red Cross, who will use it to torn apart by war or disaster.

Around 5.6 million people in the Netherlands steam videos on Netflix for an average of 84 minutes per day, according to a study by Multiscope among 6,700 respondents aged 18 and older. That amounts to around 8.3 million hours of Netflix video watching per day, Bright reports.

Netflix owns about a third of the video-on-demand viewing time in the Netherlands. YouTube is the second largest video-on-demand service in the country with 18 percent of the viewing time, followed by NPO Start with 9 percent and Ziggo GO with 9 percent.
