Several hundred people gathered on Dam Square in Amsterdam on Sunday afternoon for a peace event in commemoration of the victims of attacks on two mosques in Christchurch, New Zealand on Friday. The event was organized by 13 organizations who want to "send a powerful signal for peace and against terror", NU.nl reports.

On Friday a right-wing extremist man opened fire on two mosques in the New Zealand city. 50 people were killed and dozens were injured.

A 41-year-old man from Hoogvliet was arrested at the Maastad Hospital in Rotterdam on Friday night on suspicion of stabbing his 8-year-old daughter to death, presumably in the hospital, the police said in a statement. The man will be arraigned on Tuesday. 

According to the police, the man came to the hospital with his daughter earlier in the evening for unknown reasons. When they left again, the crisis team of youth protection called the police. Aid workers were very concerned about the welfare of the girl.

Two suspects were arrested in Amsterdam this week in connection with the coordinated terrorist attacks in Paris on November 13, 2015. The attacks killed 130 victims and injured 413 more. Seven suspects died in the incidents.
Police detained a two men, aged 29 and 31, in Amsterdam on Tuesday. A Rotterdam court ordered the younger man to remain in confinement for the next two weeks, according to the Public Prosecutor's office (OM). He is in solitary confinement to prevent any attempts to corrupt an ongoing investigation.

A man was found dead “under suspicious circumstances” in an apartment in Weert, Limburg during the early hours of Friday morning. The police went to the man’s home on Zilvermeeuw at around 2:30 a.m. after a report that he had not been seen for several days, the Telegraaf reports.

The police are investigating exactly how the man died. The home is closed down as a crime scene.

A man was found dead at the bottom of an apartment building on Argostraat in Alphen aan den Rijn on Thursday morning. His 4-year-old daughter was with him. She was injured, the police said in a statement.

The police responded to the scene at around 6:30 a.m. after reports of a man and child lying at the bottom of the apartment building. Emergency services tried to resuscitate the man, but it was to no avail.

Two videos on Dutch video streaming site Dumpert, showing a man with an automatic weapon, led the police to confiscating the gun in question as well as "an arsenal of other weapons" in Bunnik on Tuesday, the police said in a statement.

The two videos were posted on Dumpert on February 8th. They show a man, with his face covered by an emoticon, firing an automatic weapon. The police immediately launched an investigation, which led them to a home in Bunnik.

There was a striking increase in the use of methamphetamine, more popularly known as crystal meth, in Amsterdam last year, according to the annual study of waste water in European cities by the European Agency for Drugs and Drug Addiction (EMCDDA), the Telegraaf reports. 

For the study, the sewage water of various European cities are tested for drug residue. The Dutch cities of Amsterdam, Eindhoven and Utrecht are part of the study.

Over a fifth of people who fell victim to home burglary in 2017 were burgled again within a year, according to the 2017 Security Monitor by Statistics Netherlands. The chance of burglars targeting the same home more than once is greatest in cities, RTL Nieuws reports.

In 2017 two percent of the Dutch population, around 287 thousand people fell victim to a burglary or attempted burglary. For over 75 percent of the victims this only happened once, 15 percent had two burglaries, and 7 percent had three or more burglaries.

The police arrested a man on Wednesday for abducting his 9-year-old son from the child's mother in Eindhoven. The father loaded the child into a car and drove off with him, NU.nl reports.

Responding police officers found the car a short time later. Both father and son were inside the car. The father was arrested and taken to a police station for further investigation.

The boy was reunited with his mother. He is doing fine under the circumstances, according to the newspaper.

Due to the family's privacy, the police released no further details about the incident.

The police temporarily cordoned off the Grote Markt in Haarlem on Thursday morning after a suspicious package was found in front of the city hall. Investigation revealed that it was just an empty suitcase, ANP reports.

The suitcase was found on the landing of the city hall, which is located on Grote Markt, early in the morning. Defense's explosive disposal service investigated the suitcase and determined that it contained nothing dangerous. The square was released again at around 8:30 a.m.

The police call on witnesses who saw the suitcase being left there to come forward.

The police fined 23 motorists on Wednesday afternoon for filming an accident while driving. A fine of 239 euros will soon arrive at their door, NOS reports.

At around noon on Wednesday a truck's trailer collapsed on the Moerdijk Bridge towards Breda due to the strong wind. The truck ended up blocking the road. The accident caused a long traffic jam. Many drivers used the delay to take pictures or video of the accident.

A fugitive convict who the police placed on the national wanted list last week, is seemingly taunting the police with pictures and videos of himself enjoying his freedom on holiday. The man, 35-year-old Shahin Gheiybe, posted a video on Instagram in which he says he is enjoying the nice weather. The police showed the video on Opsporing Verzocht on Tuesday.

"You must not believe everything that is said about me in the media. The truth is very different", Gheiybe said on the video. The police believe the video was shot in Iran.

Minister Kasja Ollongren of Home Affairs wants to prevent social housing from ending up with people who are not entitled to them. She is therefore sharply increasing the fine for illegal subletting, from over 20 thousand euros to 83 thousand euros, RTL Nieuws reports.

The Minister is amending the Housing Act to make the higher fines possible. Soon municipalities will be able to immediately impose a 20 thousand euro fine for a first offense. The fine can increase to 83 thousand euros for people repeatedly caught illegally subletting a social rental home.

Around a hundred young people gathered at the home on Monday. Criminal offenses are kept off the books, police officers try to discourage citizens from filling reports, and cases are marked as 'resolved' when they are not, according to the study published in De Groene Amsterdammer.

The platform surveyed nearly 1,500 police officers and conducted interviews with dozens of cops and others involved.

Dutch public works department Rijkswaterstaat suspended an employee on suspicion of large-scale fraud. According to Minister Cora van Nieuwenhuizen of Infrastructure and Water Management, the employee is suspected of submitting false invoices since 2014, involving an amount of at least 1.7 million euros, NOS reports.

Rijkswaterstaat reported the incident to the police, who launched an investigation. The police suspect that others may also be involved in the fraud. The home of the employee was searched. So far no arrests were made.
