Advances in DNA identification techniques led to the identification of a body found in 2001 in Belgium. The body of Corrie van der Valk was buried in Philippeville, Belgium that same year. The 58-year-old woman was struck by a train near Namur, Belgium, and caused extensive damage as to make identification impossible at the time.

The Van der Valk family was notified of the discovery on Thursday. One of her relatives told the AD, "We are sad, but also relieved that there is now clarity after so many years."

Illegal fireworks found in Vijfhuizen warehouse

Police in the Noord-Holland town of Vijfhuizen found over 10,000 kilograms of fireworks stashed in a warehouse on Vijfhuizerdijk. Authorities said they were acting on an anonymous tip when they raided the facility.

The haul of illegal, heavy fireworks was so large, police said they needed two separate trucks to carry all of them away. Many of the fireworks were kept in boxes that identified F4-classification devices. Those are fireworks that are designated for professional use only.

Two hand grenades found around the Grote Markt in Almere on Thursday were rendered harmless by explosives experts, police said. The popular district was evacuated at the start of the business day after the first grenade was found outside an ABN Amro bank branch on Koopmanstraat at about 8:30 a.m.

A second grenade was spotted just steps away from the bank, at the Saint-Tropez shisha lounge on the popular square. Emergency workers kept the area clear until 1:30 p.m., police said on Twitter.

Customs divers found 239 kilograms of marijuana hidden under a sea going vessel docked at a terminal on Maasvlakte in Rotterdam on Sunday, the Public Prosecutor said.

The customs officer decided to dive underneath the ship after the seaport police received a report that something suspicious was detected during the maintenance of the ship. The diving team removed several large sports bags from under the ship. "The state of the bags showed that they have been in the water for a long time", the Persecutor said.

The police are looking for witnesses of a shooting incident on Krugerplein in Amsterdam Oost on Monday evening. A 45-year-old man was injured.

The shooting happened around 8:30 p.m. on Monday. When police arrived at the scene, no victim or perpetrator was in sight. The victim later came forward.

According to the police, a group of people were on Krugerplein, close to a cafe, shortly before the shooting. Investigators would like to talk to these people as they may have information that can give clarity about the circumstances surrounding the shooting.

Peter P., 63 from Heino, will be prosecuted for the death of his 54-year-old wife Durdana. She was found dead on a sailboat off the coast of Colombia on September 19th, 2015. P. claims that he and his wife were , but the judiciary thinks he killed her himself, AD reports.

Two of the four men who were on Tuesday were arrested in June after a large amount of cannabis was found in the same building, the police confirmed. The police believe that all four men were shot to death, NU.nl reports.

The victims were identified as a 43-year-old man from Enschede, a 34-year-old man from Hengelo, a 27-year-old man from Hengelo, and 62-year-old man from Arnhem.

The Attorney General of the Supreme Council wants to change the way DNA samples are taken from convicts. Currently the judiciary takes a DNA sample from everyone sentenced to four years or more in prison. According to the Attorney General, this puts privacy at stake. He suggests only taking DNA material from people convicted of serious violent or sexual offenses, NOS reports.

Multiple businesses in the hospitality industry in Amsterdam's city center were closed and fined thousands of euros for committing labor market fraud, the the Social Affairs and Employment Inspectorate and the municipality of Amsterdam announced, the Telegraaf reports.

According to the Inspectorate, the businesses forged payslips, employed foreigners without a work permit, messed with working hours, and underpaid their workers, among other things. These practices did not stop despite warnings.

The access control systems at police stations in the Netherlands are "super vulnerable" - access passes can easily be copied, sources told newspaper AD. 

In this way malicious parties can gain access to offices where police firearms are stored, evidence rooms, or even locker rooms where police uniforms are kept, according to the newspaper. Uniforms were previously stolen during a burglary at a police station in Haren. "It is super vulnerable", a source said to AD. "And that at a time when we know that criminal organizations want to frustrate the police."

Amsterdam woman Sarah L. and her young daughter were killed in a bombardment in the Syrian town of Hajin, near the border with Iraq, on Friday, sources around the woman's family confirmed to Het Parool. L. went to Syria in 2014.

According to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, a few dozen people were killed in the bombardment. L. lived in an apartment complex where other families also lived.

Skeletal remains were found in a forest plot on the corner of Zomerweg and Zutphen Emmerikseweg in Humelo on Tuesday. The police launched a large investigation. Whether the remains are human, is not yet clear, the police said to De Gelderlander.

Eight police cars and the forensic investigation department were at the scene early on Tuesday evening. The investigation was halted at around 8:30 p.m., with a few officers staying behind to guard the area. The police will continue investigating on Wednesday morning.

Four men were found killed in a business premises on Van Leeuwenhoekstraat in Enschede on Tuesday. According to the police, initial investigation showed that they were killed by violence. The identity of the victims are still under investigation.

The police responded to a report of an incident at the building around 3:00 p.m. on Tuesday. They found the bodies inside. The building and area around it were closed down as a crime scene for forensic investigation.

On Monday the court sentenced 40-year-old Toon N. to 12 years in prison for shooting and killing Yassine Majiti in the parking lot of Beachclub Sunrise in Best last year. The Public Prosecutor demanded 16 years in prison against the man, the Telegraaf reports.

The shooting happened during a salsa party early on the morning of November 6th, 2017. There were several disturbances between the groups of men that the victim and suspect belonged to. The fight spilled over into the parking lot, where Majiti was shot in the head at close range.

Two people were found dead in an apartment on Beethovenstraat in Sittard on Monday evening. The victims' identity and cause of death are still under investigation. "We take multiple scenarios into account", a spokesperson for the police said to NU.nl.

Police officers found the two bodies around 8:00 p.m. The apartment was closed down as a crime scene. Technical detectives performed investigations in the apartment, as well as the staircase of the four floor apartment building.

The police are also speaking to local residents.

The Public Prosecutor is prosecuting three soldiers for their involvement in a fatal diving accident on Curacao in 2015, in which a 23-year-old woman was killed. They are accused of violating service regulations and thereby creating a "life-threatening situation", the Prosecutor announced on Monday.

The soldiers facing prosecution are two men, aged 44 and 51 years, and a 49-year-old woman. They are all members of the Royal Netherlands Navy.

On Monday the court of appeal sentenced Mario H. to four years and six months in prison for attempted manslaughter. In January last year H. assaulted a 46-year-old former psychiatric prisoner with a snow shovel because the man had tried to lure his then 14-year-old daughter into a sexual relationship. According to the court, H. beat his victim hard enough with the snow shovel that he "knowingly accepted the chance that he would die as a result", NOS reports.
