The Court of Appeals sentenced 41-year-old Shurandy S. to 28 years in prison for the murder of Reduan B., the brother of key witness Nabil B., in Amsterdam last year. The court called S. "extremely cold, calculating, and merciless" in its ruling, NOS reports. 

S. was previously sentenced to 20 years in prison. The appeal sentence is equal to what the Public Prosecutor demanded.

Police in the Netherlands announced the arrest of Ridouan Taghi on Monday. The 41-year-old wanted fugitive was taken into custody in Dubai, police said. The OM, the Dutch prosecution service, has requested the extradition of Taghi from Dubai.

Cash machines in the Netherlands will largely be out of service every overnight from 11 p.m. to 7 a.m., the Dutch Banking Association (NVB) said on Monday. The ATMs will be switched off in an effort to prevent thefts where criminals use explosives as a way to break into the cash machines.

The police found a thousand kilograms of illegal fireworks in a garage on Tichlerstraat in IJsselmuiden on Sunday, after receiving an anonymous tip. Two men were arrested, the Overijssel police said on Twitter.

"The fireworks were therefore stored in the middle of a residential neighborhood", the police said, calling the situation "life-threateningly dangerous".

An investigation into the death of a man found inside a garbage bin in Edam late Sunday morning suggested that no foul play was involved. Police say the man was a 39-year-old from Muntendam, a small village in Groningen over 170 kilometers away from where he was found dead.

The body was found with its legs sticking out of a wheelie bin on the grounds of a meeting center used by the Edam-Vollendam municipality, and managed by the regional water board. “We live here in the street and were sent photos by our neighbors,” a local resident told broadcaster NH. “We were shocked.”

Gokmen T., the suspected gunman in a mass shooting on a tram in Utrecht in March, did not appear in court for a proforma hearing in his case on Monday, despite a court order that he attend. A lot of violence would have been needed to get him to the courtroom, the court said. "It is not up to the suspect to dictate whether he appears or not, but under these circumstances the court refrains from forcing him to be present," the court president said, according to broadcaster NOS.

So far this year there's been 52, excluding doping cases. "This mainly concerns sexual harassment and other inappropriate behavior", ISR secretary Henk van Aller said to the Telegraaf.

At least a quarter of elderly people in the Netherlands have been targeted by scammers who tried to chat their way into their homes. Over a fifth of targeted people had money or other valuables stolen, according to a study by seniors' organization KBO-PCOB among 1,300 senior citizens. The organization called for measures, AD reports.

A man was killed in an accident with a police car in Riethoven, Noord-Brabant during the early hours of Monday morning. He was driving a car stolen from Waalre around 15 minutes before the crash, the Oost-Brabant police said on Twitter.

According to the police, patrolling officers spotted the car in question shortly after receiving a report of the car theft and gave chase. When the police went around a bend on Hobbel, the stolen car was standing stationary in the middle of the road. The police officers could not prevent a collision. This happened at around 1:45 a.m.

Police in the Netherlands issued an Amber Alert for a missing boy from Ede. The boy's mother, Rowena van der V., absconded with the 14-month-old child at about 10 a.m. on Friday.

The two were last seen in Ede, Gelderland, and then in the city of Utrecht police said. They departed "from Ede for an unknown destination," authorities said.

Very few details about either the young boy or his mother were released. The child has blond hair, and was born on Sept. 8, 2018. Both he and Van der V., 26, were wearing the photos seen in the security camera image above.

Two police officers from the Noord-Holland unit were arrested at the police station in Haarlem on Thursday on suspicion of leaking confidential police information to newspaper NRC. One of the two suspected cops is a female police officer who revealed racist abuses at the Hoefkade police station in The Hague and accused a superior of sexual assault, multiple sources told newspaper AD.

Police working at the Amsterdam Sloterdijk train station arrested a suspect for allegedly making bomb threats. The threats were made by a person inside a train early Friday afternoon, a spokesperson for Dutch national railway NS told media outlets.

“No explosive was found,” police said in a statement.

Authorities were dispatched to the station before 12:15 p.m., and police confirmed they were responding to a suspicious situation about 15 minutes later. The arrest was made and the situation was resolved by 12:40 p.m., police said.

According to the Public Prosecution Service, the 53-year-old filmmaker had a gas or alarm revolver with a obstruction in the barrel, for which he had no license, NU.nl reports.

The police released a video of an incident in the Duindorp neighborhood of The Hague on December 3rd. Someone in a group of young people threw a firework bomb under a police van, which was in the area due to unrest after the annual New Year's bonfire was canceled. The police are looking for the perpetrators.

The blast severely damaged the police van. Fortunately, none of the seven police officers inside were injured, though some did report issues with their ears afterwards.

A total of 134 police officers in the Netherlands were fired or suspended for violating integrity rules last year, an 8 percent increase compared to 2017. The most common reason for disciplinary action taken against a police officer was "violation of standards in private life", followed by leaking, abusing or withholding information, according to figures the police released on Thursday.

Shots rang out at a sports school in Amstelveen on Thursday afternoon, leaving one person dead in a likely street assassination. The suspects in the case evaded arrest, and their vehicle was later found in flames, police said.

The victim had just put his child into his car when the shooting took place, crime reporter Wouter Laumens said on Twitter. The car was a BMW with bulletproof armor, reported the Parool. After the shooting, the child ran back into the sports center.

Authorities working at the port in Vlissingen discovered roughly 1,200 kilograms of cocaine. The drugs were discovered hidden in a banana shipment that was delivered to a company based at the port, police said.

A criminal investigation was launched after the contraband was found on Tuesday afternoon. No arrests were announced in the case. “The drugs have since been removed and destroyed,” police said.

Banana shipments have been a frequent cover for cocaine traffickers in the Netherlands this year.

From next year, Netherlands residents and businesses who suffered collective damage, for example through a car or another product that's been tampered with, can go together to court to get their damages compensated. A new law by Minister Sander Dekker for Legal Protection, which allows these class action lawsuits, takes effect on January 1st.

Currently, joint proceedings only allow for a judge to make a ruling, for example on whether a company acted lawfully. No compensation can be claimed. If the ruling is in the victims' favor, they have to arrange the compensation themselves.
