A decorated military veteran was arrested over the weekend in Den Bosch, accused of striking a police officer with a head butt. The officer initially stopped Marco Kroon, 47, for urinating in public, according to the Brabants Dagblad.

The investigation was reportedly being carried out by the Marechaussee, the branch of the military which handles border enforcement and specific policing duties. Current and former members of the military accused of criminal offenses often have their cases investigated by Marechaussee personnel, RTL Nieuws reported.

A banner with insulting text about the Prophet Muhammad was placed at the As-Soennah mosque in The Hague on Sunday morning. Anti-Islam movement Pegida is responsible for the the action, a spokesperson for the movement confirmed to NOS on Sunday afternoon. 

Translated from Dutch, the banner read: "Prophet Muhammad children fucker". The banner was accompanied by a mannequin wearing a beard, a robe, a turban, and carrying a baby doll. The mannequin was supposed to show Muhammad "having sex with a baby", Abdelhamid Taheri, an employee of the mosque, said to NOS.

Amsterdam is still the city in the Netherlands with the highest crime figures, according to newspaper AD's annual crime monitor Misdaadmeter. Neighboring municipality Diemen is catching up to the Dutch capital, moving from the 26th most unsafe municipality in 2017 to the 8th last year. Limburg counts four municipalities in the top 10 least safe, AD reports.

An explosion outside a coffee shop in Amsterdam Oost on Sunday morning prompted officials to evacuate several buildings in the area. The blast was the second to take place near the Smoke Palace in the last six weeks.

No injuries were reported in the immediate aftermath on Linnaeusstraat, were the incident took place.

From March 1st the Dutch police will be allowed to hack into the computer, smartphone or server of people suspected of serious crimes - crimes that carry a prison sentence of at least 4 years. The law that makes this possible was implemented on Friday, NU.nl reports.

Prosecutors in the Willem Holleeder murder trial have demanded life imprisonment for the notorious defendant. Holleeder, an alleged organized crime mastermind, is accused of ordering or otherwise taking part in the murders of five different men, and also manslaughter, attempted manslaughter, and running a criminal enterprise.

One prosecutor, Sabine Tammes, said Holleder was driven entirely by greed no matter what consequences befell his victims and their relations. "In the end, it was always about money," she said.

A criminal case is being prepared against Dutch oil and gas giant Shell. The company is suspected of paying bribes for the exploitation rights of an oil field off the coast of Nigeria, Shell said on its website and the Dutch Public Prosecutor confirmed to NOS.

The Prosecutor told NOS that the investigation is almost complete and they are working on the criminal prosecution of Shell.

This case involves the acquisition of the rights to oil field OPL-245. Shell, together with Italian energy group Eni, paid 1.3 billion euros for these rights in 2011.

The so-called NLA program is playing an important role in at least six criminal cases, the news agencies report after speaking to lawyers representing returned foreign rebel fighters in the Syrian civil war.

The police are allowed to force a suspect to unlock their smartphone with a fingerprint scan. This method is not in conflict with the principle that a suspect does not have to cooperate with their own conviction, the Noord-Holland court ruled on Thursday in a case against three men suspected of phishing activities. Shots were fired at a home in Helmond, injuring the resident, early on Thursday morning. While the police were chasing the suspected perpetrators, one of the suspects jumped out of the moving car. He was "very seriously injured", the Oost-Brabant police said on Twitter.

The shooting happened on Zeppelinstraat in Helmond at around 4:00 a.m., RTL Nieuws reports. The resident was hit in his lower leg. He was taken to hospital. A woman and a young child were also in the home during the shooting. They were not hurt.

State Secretary Mark Harbers of Justice and Security stripped 37-year-old Outhmane B. of his Dutch nationality. B. traveled to Syria with his family in 2014 and followed jihadist training courses there. He was put on the national terrorism list in 2016, De Gelderlander reports.

According to the newspaper, B. lost his Dutch nationality because he "joined an organization that participates in a national or international armed conflict and poses a threat to national security". The man can appeal against the decision.

A 20-year-old man from Groningen was arrested during a routine traffic check on the A28 near Zwolle after the police found 67 kilograms of cannabis and 69 packets of hashish in the trunk of his car. According to the police, the drugs have a street value of over 500 thousand euros.

A 23-year-old woman died in a home on Van der Munniklaan in the Groningen village of Lees early on Thursday morning. The 30-year-old male resident was arrested on suspicion of involvement in her death. He was taken to a police station for questioning, RTV Noord reports.

Paramedics responded to the home and found the woman seriously injured. Attempts to save her life were to no avail. She died at the scene. The man called the ambulance. The paramedics called the police when they found out it involved a violent incident, according to the local broadcaster.

A tourist was hit by a car on an exit from the A2 in Amsterdam on Tuesday night. The 21-year-old woman was taken to hospital. She was under the influence, NOS reports.

How seriously the tourist was injured is not known, but she was conscious and able to speak to emergency workers, according to the broadcaster. The exit at the Amstel junction was closed for a time for investigation.

A hand grenade was found in thrift store RataPlan on Van Slingelandtstraat in Amsterdam on Tuesday. The grenade was found in a box that was being unpacked by an employee. It is unclear how long the box had been in the store, Het Parool reports.

The police safely removed the explosive. According to the police, it was a real hand grenade, but it was harmless as it could no longer detonate. People living and working around the store were therefore not in danger.

The police closed down the area around the thrift store as a precaution while they investigated.

A boy was stabbed in the Nelson Mandela park in Amsterdam Zuidoost on Tuesday afternoon. He was rushed to hospital with unknown injuries.

The stabbing happened around 4:00 p.m., according to NOS. The police can not yet say anything about the motive of the stabbing. The extent of the victim's injuries is also unknown.

The police are looking for a man with dark skin who was wearing a black jacket, gray pants and a cap.
