Damage to private property caused this past New Year's Eve in the Netherlands is expected to reach roughly 15 million euros, but the estimated value is expected rise higher when the extend of damage to commercial property is included. The cost estimate from the Dutch Association of Insurers, which does not include medical expenses due to fireworks-related injuries, is similar to figures released a year ago.

An Ede mortuary expressed anger and confusion on social media after a funeral procession it organized on New Year's Eve was pelted with exploding fireworks. The Gelderland city faced a string of disturbing New Year's incidents against aid workers, which the city's mayor, René Verhulst, said was "terrible and sickening."

The procession had just left the funeral home and was headed towards the cemetery with the funeral director walking in front of the hearse. It was right around noon when "young people shot fireworks at him and the hearse," the Van de Weerd mortuary said.

A shooting at a popular recreation park in Amsterdam left two people injured early Thursday morning. Both victims were found conscious at the scene and were transported to an area hospital.

The gun-related incident was reported just before 4 a.m. on the Valburgdreef in Amsterdam Zuidoost. "Once on location at the Gaasperplas parking lot they found two men with gunshot wounds," police said.

By the time police arrived the suspect, or suspects, had fled the scene, possibly by car. No description of the gunman was immediately released.

Three people were seriously injured and nine others were hurt at an apartment complex in The Hague after smoke caused by several car fires billowed into their building. Several people were rescued by firefighters on ladders and aerial platforms as first responders evacuated part of the street.

At least five vehicles parked in a car port on the street showed signs of fire damage. Suffocating clouds of black smoke rose from the street into the apartment windows above, leading to the injuries

Firefighters in the Netherlands responded to 4,340 reported incidents between New Year's Eve and the beginning of New Year's Day. The number corresponds to nearly a three percent increase over the same period last year, though 14 of the 25 emergency services regions showed a decrease.

Two pre-teen boys were being held by police Wednesday afternoon in connection with a fire in Arnhem that left two members of a family dead, and two other family members critically injured. Fireworks were being investigated as the cause of the fatal blaze based on security camera footage recovered at the scene, police said.

Police took the two boys, aged 12 and 13, into custody, police said on social media. They are being held on suspicion of causing a fatal arson.

The Eye Hospital in Rotterdam treated a total of 18 victims who sustained injuries to their eyes due to fireworks by 11:30 p.m. on New Year's Eve. According to the hospital, this was the busiest New Year's in years, NOS reports.

A total of 20 eyes were injured, including 10 that sustained permanent damage. None of the victims wore firework safety glasses, and most incidents involved legal fireworks. The youngest victim is 14 years old. The most other victims are in their 30s.

A 52-year-old man was shot and killed on Buitengasthuisstraat in Zwolle on Tuesday evening. The police are looking for the perpetrator or perpetrators, a spokesperson for the Oost-Nederland police said to NU.nl.

According to the spokesperson, police officers responded to the scene after a report of a stabbing. "A person saw someone lying on the street." But at the scene, they quickly determined that the man had been shot.

First responders tried to resuscitate the victim, but it was to no avail. He died at the scene.

At midnight the Netherlands rang in 2020 with firework shows in Rotterdam and The Hague, where the thick fog cleared just in time. While Justice Minister Ferdinand Grapperhaus said he feared a "wild west party" this New Year's, there were no major incidents. There were, however, a very large number of car fires, especially in The Hague region, and multiple incidents of aid workers and first responders being attacked or harassed, according to various Dutch media.

A man and a 4-year-old boy were killed in a fire in an apartment building in Arnhem early on New Year's morning. A woman and girl were seriously injured, the Gelderland police said on Twitter on Wednesday morning.

The fire started in the entrance hall of the building on Gelderseplein at around 1:00 a.m. The two adults and two children were found in the elevator. Whether it involves a family, is not yet clear.

At least one person was killed, and 19 others were injured when dozens of cars rammed into each other on the A32 highway near Akkrum, Friesland. As dense fog reduced visibility in parts of the country to just five meters, Dutch infrastructure agency Rijkswaterstaat called on drivers to stay off the roads unless absolutely necessary.

The trouble at Akkrum started just after 6:30 p.m. at marker 57.5. Firefighters, paramedics and police were all quickly dispatched to the scene. A trauma team was sent in a helicopter about 20 minutes later to assist the first responders.

Customs officials in and around Rotterdam found a total of 775 kilograms of cocaine in three separate investigations. The busts all took place between Friday and Sunday, with authorities taking seven people into custody.

A man found shot to death in a Schiedam home was not a resident, but rather lived 20 kilometers away in Rijswijk, police said Monday evening. The 26-year-old died at the Boomgaardstraat crime scene after authorities were dispatched to the area around 7:30 p.m. on Saturday.

Attempts by paramedics and a trauma team to revive the man failed. Meanwhile, forensic investigators began collecting trace evidence.

An ABN Amro ATM on Zijdelwaardplein in Uithoorn was blown open with an explosive early on Tuesday morning. Two suspects were seen fleeing the scene on a dark colored scooter, the Amsterdam police said on Twitter. Whether they managed to steal any cash, is not yet clear.

The ATM bombing happened at around 3:50 a.m. The police cordoned off the area and called in explosive experts from both the police and the Ministry of Defense to investigate whether any explosives were left behind.

Philips was one of multiple global companies affected by a major espionage campaign by Chinese hackers, The Wall Street Journal reported. The espionage, called Operation Cloud Hopper, was discovered in 2016 and security researchers believe the hackers have links with the Chinese government.

According to The Wall Street Journal, the hackers managed to steal medical research data from Philips. The company said that measurers have been taken and that no patient data had been stolen.

A robbery caused massive damage at jeweler Paul van Zeeland in Velp on Monday morning. The three perpetrators used an explosive to blow open the roller shutter and then ransacked the store, manager Gerrit-Jan Grandia said to Omroep Gelderland.

The robbery happened at around 3:15 a.m. on Monday. The perpetrators smashed eight showcases and took "an incredible amount of jewelry" with them, Grandia said. All in all, the robbers were in the store for around two minutes.

Multiple neighborhoods in The Hague were restless on Monday night, the night before New Year's Eve. The police arrested a total of 19 people, on suspicion of throwing fireworks and arson, among other things, NOS reports.

A party was held on Dr. De Visserplein, organized by the volunteers behind the canceled New Year's bonfire on Scheveningen beach. When the party was over, multiple fires were set in the area and the police had to intervene. At around midnight, the police ordered everyone to leave the street and arrested those who refused.

Six people accused of were arrested Monday morning in The Hague, including one who was accused of setting off a heavy firework bomb underneath a police van. One of the seven police officers inside the van suffered permanent hearing damage from the December 3 explosion, police said on Monday.

A teenaged boy stabbed in front of a Drachten cafe on December 22 died of his injuries a week later. The 16-year-old had been taken to the hospital in serious condition following the stabbing in the Friesland town. 

Soon after the violent incident, a 14-year-old boy from Drachten and a 15-year-old boy from Gorredijk were taken into custody. Police have not revealed a motive for the stabbing.
