Dutch insurers are getting more and more damage claims related to car fires. Last year there were 4,359 such claims, a 9 percent increase compared to the 4,014 car fire claims in 2017, RTL Nieuws reports based on the latest figures from the Dutch Association of Insurers.

Crime reporter Pieter R. de Vries said on Tuesday that he is on the hit list of still fugitive criminal Ridouan Taghi. According to De Vries, Taghi wants him murdered because of statements he made about the man, he said to the Telegraaf.

"The only thing I can do now is to publicize this", De Vries said to the newspaper. He hopes to soon get more information from the criminal environment, he said.

The police and fire department suspect that a large wildfire on the Veluwe in Epe on Monday was deliberately lit. Some 100 by 200 meters of heather burned down. A suspect was arrested after a short search. "We had a good description", a spokesperson for the police said to Omroep Gelderland.

Around a hundred activists occupied a pig farm in Boxtel on Monday in a protest meant to draw attention to animal suffering in the Netherlands. On the dark web, men in private networks frequently share images on which specifically Dutch children are abused. New material is added every week, including of children who are still being actively abused, according to research by RTL Nieuws, which went undercover on 14 such networks for several months. 

The broadcaster said it informed the police about the investigation before publication. The police are monitoring the currently still active networks. The anonymity of the dark web makes it difficult to take these networks offline.

The Ministry of Defense suspended a platoon commander from the Royal Military Academy in Breda because he had a number of love affairs with female cadets, the Ministry confirmed to RTL Nieuws after reports in the Telegraaf.

The man involved is a captain in charge of a training platoon at the academy for upcoming officers, according to the broadcaster. The Ministry did not want to say anything more about the man's rank for privacy reasons.

A 40-year-old Dutch man was arrested in Great Britain last week after 35 kilograms of cocaine was found in his truck. The trucker was arrested in North Lincolnshire on Thursday after he and his truck arrived at the Hull port by ferry, RTL Nieuws reports.

The drugs were hidden in the truck's back doors. According to the local authorities, the cocaine has an estimated street value of around 3 million pounds, nearly 3.5 million euros. 

The Dutch truck driver was arraigned and remanded into custody until June 7th, when he again has to appear in court.

The police discovered a large crystal meth lab on a cargo river boat in Moerdijk on Friday afternoon. The boat turned out to be booby-trapped. While the police were raiding it on Friday night, the boat suddenly started sinking.

A total of four men were arrested, three of whom are from Mexico. So far the police said nothing about the suspects' backgrounds, but according to De Telegraaf they may be tied to a Mexican drug cartel.

In the two days after flight MH17 was shot down over eastern Ukraine, a Russian troll factory posted over 65 thousand tweets blaming Ukraine for the disaster, De Groene Amsterdammer reports after analyzing 9 million tweets posted by a St Petersburg based troll factory called the Internet Research Agency.

According to the magazine, an organized campaign was launched after MH17 was shot down. The Internet Research Agency played a role in this, as did pro-Russia media who circulated theories that 'proved' Russia innocent in the disaster.

A man was injured in a shooting on Jorens Ivensplein in IJburg on Sunday night. He was taken to hospital with unknown injuries.

The shooting happened at around 11:00 p.m. in the Amsterdam-Oost area, according to NU.nl. The victim was conscious and able to communicate when he was taken to hospital, the police said.

The police are looking for one suspect. The motive for the shooting is not yet clear. The police are investigating.

The police took DutchMagic, the largest coffeeshop on the dark web, offline at the end of last year, the police said on Thursday. A 42-year-old man from Hoensbroek in Limburg is in custody and more arrests are expected.

According to the police, millions of euros in soft drugs were sold through DutchMagic per year. The transactions were paid for with cryptocurrency and the drugs were sent through the regular mail.

Thijs H., the man suspected of fatally stabbing three people while they were walking their dogs in The Hague and Heerlen, is or was being treated by the Mondriaan psychiatric institution in Maastricht, a spokesperson for the Public Prosecutor said on Thursday. Police cameras are being installed at the campus on the NDSM site in Amsterdam Noord after an "unacceptable" number of incidents, mayor Femke Halsema said in a letter to the city council. Incidents involved rape, burglary and muggings, and attempts thereto, she said, NU.nl reports.

The cameras come on top of previous measures taken, such as extra police patrols, better lighting, and "resilience training" for local residents. "Despite these measures, the number of incidents is unacceptably high", the mayor said.
