Police in Hünxe, Germany said that explosives were found during the search of a car at a filling station there. The 25-year-old Dutch driver of the Volkswagen Golf, with license plates from the Netherlands, was detained.

“The officers found explosive material that was presumably going to be used to blow up ATMs,” police said in a statement.

Minister Carola Schouten of Agriculture is intervening at Dutch slaughterhouses after another undercover video was published showing workers at a slaughterhouse in IJsselstein beating pigs and pulling crippled animals by the tail. Schouten was shocked by the video. "You cannot use violence against animals. This is unacceptable," she said to RTL Nieuws.

The video was released by RTL Nieuws on Friday. It shows slaughterhouse employees beating the animals in their care, sometimes with inspectors from Dutch food safety authority NVWA watching on or even participating.

A Dutch woman was brutally stabbed to death in her home in Melbourne earlier this week, while she was video calling with a friend on Skype. The victim was identified as 61-year-old Maud Steenbeek, a yoga instructor from the Netherlands who retired in Heidelberg, Australia, the Telegraaf reports.

Steenbeek was video calling with a friend when the perpetrator snuck up behind her and attacked her. The connection was broken and the friend called one of Steenbeek's sons in a panic.

Dino Soerel, who is serving a life sentence for involvement in assassinations, tried to escape from the prison in Heerhugowaard with another prisoner on Thursday evening, the Telegraaf reported. The Ministry of Justice and Security said that Soerel was transferred to the high security prison in Vught due to "suspicions of an escape attempt" and that the case is under investigation, RTL Nieuws reports.

A fire broke out in an apartment building on Roomtuintjes in Amsterdam on Thursday evening. Seven people were treated for smoke inhalation, three of them had to go to hospital. The cause of the fire is not yet known, AT5 reports.

The authorities believe the fire started in a kitchen on the third floor of the building. A bystander told the Amsterdam broadcaster that the home was completely destroyed.

The residents of the building were evacuated and checked over by paramedics, while firefighters extinguished the fire.

The police pulled over a drunk driver in Lelystad during the early hours of Thursday morning and found that she was four times over the alcohol limit with six young children in the car with her. "Her driver's license was of course confiscated immediately and she will soon have to answer to the judge," the Lelystad police said on Facebook.

The tax climate in the Netherlands, and the room it offers for letterbox companies and tax avoidance, costs the world an estimated 22 billion euros a year, according to calculations by economics professor Arjan Lejour of Tilburg University, Trouw reports.

Lejour based his calculations on the average results of 10 international investigations into global tax breaks. He then calculated the Netherlands' share based on the foreign investments that enter the country, and then immediately leave again.

Police arrested a 31-year-old Rotterdam man who they suspect of co-perpetrating the assassination of criminal defense attorney Derk Wiersum last September. The man was arrested in Amsterdam on Monday, and remanded into custody by a magistrate on Thursday, police said.

The Dutch government has reached a deal to outlaw firecrackers and sky rockets, government sources told broadcaster NOS and website NU.nl. The prohibition will take effect before the upcoming New Year's period, and could potentially be in line with recommendations issued by the Dutch Safety Board in 2017.

ATMs in the Netherlands will remain closed at night for at least another year in an effort to prevent criminals trying to blow them open to get at the cash inside, the Dutch association of banks NVB announced on Thursday. It will take at least that long for all cash machines to be equipped with the technology that automatically destroys cash in the event of an ATM bombing, the association said.

A man was injured in a shooting on Bartokstraat in Tilburg during the early hours of Thursday morning. He was taken to hospital by ambulance. At this stage, nothing is known about his identity or the severity of his injuries.

The police responded to reports of a shooting at around 1:15 a.m. "There is no known description yet of the perpetrator or perpetrators," a police spokesperson said to Omroep Brabant. "Officers have been in contact with witnesses. A statement is being taken from them."

A 41-year-old woman from Amersfoort was acquitted on appeal of manslaughter on her two newborn babies. The bodies of the two children were found in her home in 2014. The Court of Appeal in Den Bosch did not consider manslaughter proven. Experts testified that the babies were likely stillborn. The Public Prosecutor demanded institutionalized psychiatric care against the woman, NOS reports.

The babies were born in 2002 and 2004. The mother, Johanna H., put the bodies in a cookie tin and a beauty case and did not report their deaths to the police until 2014.

A majority in the lower house of Dutch parliament is in favor of increasing the maximum penalty for manslaughter, as the chief executive at the Public Prosecution Service called for earlier this month. The parliamentarians agree that the gap between the 30 years maximum prison sentence for murder and the current 15 years for manslaughter must be decreased, RTL Nieuws reports.

Minor suspects of a criminal offense should not be detained in a police cell and that principle must be laid down in the law, the council for the application of criminal justice and youth protection RSJ said in advice to Ministers Ferdinand Grapperhaus of Justice and Security and Sander Dekker for Legal Protection, NRC reports.

Currently, Dutch law allows children from the age of 12 who are suspected of a crime or violation to be detained pending questioning. In the case of serious crimes, they can be kept in custody for up to three days if the police investigation demands it.

A general practitioner with a practice in Brunssum was arrested for the third time on suspicion that he sexually abused his patients. The man was arrested on Monday after two former patients reported him to the police. He is in custody for further investigation, NOS reports.

The police found human remains in a mixing bucket filled with concrete that was discovered in the Scheldt-Rijn canal in Nieuw-Vossemeer on Thursday. The remains were identified as Johan van der Heyden, a Belgian plumber who has been missing since June 2nd last year, the police said in a statement on Tuesday. 

The police found the container in the waterway last week after "rumors" that the man's body was cast in concrete and dumped in the Scheldt-Rijn canal.

Three people were arrested in connection with a fatal shooting in a student home in Amsterdam Zuidoost during the early hours of Tuesday morning, the police said in a statement. A 26-year-old man from Amsterdam was killed in the shooting.

The police responded to a report of shots fired at the home on Daalwijk around 1:00 a.m. on Tuesday morning. First responders found the 26-year-old man with a bullet wound in his back. They tried to resuscitate him, but it was to no avail. The man died at the scene.

Three people who were found dead in a house fire in Duiven on Friday morning, were killed in a murder-suicide, the police said on Monday. Extensive investigation showed that the 64-year-old man, the 58-year-old woman, and their 20-year-old daughter did not die in the fire, the police said.

A 26-year-old man was shot and killed in a home on Daalwijk in Amsterdam Zuidoost, the Amsterdam police said on Twitter early on Tuesday morning.

First responders found the man with a bullet wound inside the home. They tried to resuscitate him, but it was to no avail. He died at the scene.

So far nothing is known about the circumstances surrounding the shooting. The police will release more information during the course of Tuesday.

Police in Amsterdam said they found 30 mobile phones stuffed inside a pair of cycling shorts being worn by a pickpocketing suspect at the time they detained him. Authorities took the 34-year-old man from Romania into custody when they made the discovery on January 21.

It happened during a performance in Amsterdam-Zuidoost, after several "reports of pickpocketing came in during the concert," police said. "Some victims could also provide a description."

All exits to the venue were sealed off, and a suspect fitting the description was spotted by police.
