Authorities say a police officer who was arrested over his involvement in an off-duty “violent incident” has been suspended. “Drugs were found during the investigation,” police note, and the criminal case is ongoing.

“In addition to the criminal investigation, a disciplinary investigation has also been started,” authorities confirm. “The employee has since been suspended, but he has no access to police buildings and systems during the investigations.”

Two airline passengers were arrested separately at Schiphol Airport this month carrying a combined total of about 275 thousand euros in cash. Both men were caught at airport security checkpoints, and neither had a valid reason for holding the money, authorities said.

The first suspect is a 38-year-old Ukranian man who was found with 195 thousand dollars (€174,600) in a plastic bag inside his backpack. He was destined for Ecuador, but was taken into custody on March 1, said the Marechausseee, the military branch tasked with protecting Dutch borders and airports.

Amsterdam and Rotterdam saw a major increase in the number of minors involved in incidents with weapons over the past years. The number of stabbings in Rotterdam involving underage victims and suspects doubled last year. And the number of underage suspects in weapon incidents in Amsterdam increased by 50 percent since 2017, NOS reports based on figures from the local police stations.

Police say a terrifying home invasion robbery in Rotterdam left a young mother fearing for her life and the life of her young daughter. The two were tied up and held at gunpoint by two unknown assailants speaking to each other in Papiamento.

It happened Tuesday at about 9:30 a.m. on the Zevenkampse Ring. The 24-year-old woman was leaving with her two-year-old girl when she was pushed back into her home by one of the robbers. He was then assisted by his partner.

The police placed 25-year-old Youssef Ben Hamou on the national wanted list in connection with a shooting in Almere. Hamou is suspected of involvement a shooting in an apartment in the heart of Almere, in which a 35-year-old man was killed on December 21 last year, the police said.

The police believe the motive behind the shooting was a drug deal that got out of hand. There are two suspects in this case. One, a 20-year-old man from Amsterdam, is already in custody. Youssef Ben Hamou is the second suspect.

The number of electric bikes stolen in the Netherlands increased explosively last year, according to travelers' association and bike insurer ANWB. Over 3,800 e-bikes were reported stolen to the ANWB last year, 38 percent more than the year before. The claim amounts increased by 47 percent. "We lost  millions of euros last year," Bert Gelling of ANWB insurance branch said to AD.

Three men were arrested at Schiphol Airport on Monday evening after a loaded gun was found in their possession, the Koninklijke Marechaussee said on Facebook on Wednesday. 

The firearm was discovered during a routine check of a car with three people inside on the airport's departure passage. During the check, a Marechaussee officer noticed that one of the passengers was acting very nervously. He tried to escape the check by getting out of the car, throwing a bag into the back seat as he did so.

Two people were injured in a shooting on Zeehaenkade in Utrecht on Tuesday night. They were taken to hospital for treatment. Four suspects were arrested, the Utrecht police said on Twitter.

The shooting happened at around 10:00 p.m. in an office district south of Transwijk. The victims were conscious and able to talk to first responders, the police said.

The motive for the shooting was not immediately disclosed by police. The four suspects were taken to a police station for interrogation.

Multiple witnesses in the MH17 trial are afraid of retribution or even being assassinated over their testimony in this case, the Public Prosecution Service (OM) said on the second day of the trial against the first four men suspected of involvement in the downing of the Malaysia Airlines plane in Ukraine in 2014. Dozens of witnesses are at risk of being seriously threatened by the Russian security forces, the OM said, NOS reports.

Despite the success of a 2019 weapons collections program, where anyone with armaments can dispose of them no questions asked, authorities say they have no plans to roll out a nationwide version of the event, sources told broadcaster NOS.

A local version organized in Rotterdam last January and February was considered a success, with over 260 weapons and 650 kilograms of ammunition collected. The weapons included 60 firearms, 43 knives, and various other items like Samurai-style swords and brass knuckles, police said at the time.

A major fire in a snack bar in Rotterdam prompted the evacuation of 16 buildings and at least 50 people in Rotterdam West on Sunday evening. Four people were treated for smoke inhalation, one of whom had to go to hospital, RTV Rijnmond reports.

The fire department responded to reports of a fire in the snack bar on Schiedamseweg at around 8:00 p.m. Extinguishing the fire was a complicated task, given that the snack bar is surrounded by other buildings.

The illegal cannabis farms discovered and closed down in the Netherlands last year stole a total of around 60 million euros in electricity, according to Netbeheer Nederland. Some 114 kilowatt hours of electricity were stolen by the caught cannabis cultivators, NOS reports.

A 38-year-old man was sentenced to six weeks in jail this week for striking a 10-year-old boy outside a grocery store in Dordrecht. The boy had asked the man for his collectible football stickers being given away as a store promotion when the violent incident occurred.

The boy was waiting outside of the Albert Heijn in the Stadspolder district on February 12th, asking many of the store's customers for the packets of stickers. The offender snapped, struck the boy, and then shoved him. He was arrested after store employees identified him to police.

An international crime ring that imported thousands of kilograms of heroin to the Netherlands was broken up this week with the arrests of three people in Amsterdam and Dordrecht. Authorities said the drugs were brought to the capital to then be distributed back out to Germany, the Scandinavian countries, and the United Kingdom.
