A major fire in a snack bar in Rotterdam prompted the evacuation of 16 buildings and at least 50 people in Rotterdam West on Sunday evening. Four people were treated for smoke inhalation, one of whom had to go to hospital, RTV Rijnmond reports.

The fire department responded to reports of a fire in the snack bar on Schiedamseweg at around 8:00 p.m. Extinguishing the fire was a complicated task, given that the snack bar is surrounded by other buildings.

The illegal cannabis farms discovered and closed down in the Netherlands last year stole a total of around 60 million euros in electricity, according to Netbeheer Nederland. Some 114 kilowatt hours of electricity were stolen by the caught cannabis cultivators, NOS reports.

A 38-year-old man was sentenced to six weeks in jail this week for striking a 10-year-old boy outside a grocery store in Dordrecht. The boy had asked the man for his collectible football stickers being given away as a store promotion when the violent incident occurred.

The boy was waiting outside of the Albert Heijn in the Stadspolder district on February 12th, asking many of the store's customers for the packets of stickers. The offender snapped, struck the boy, and then shoved him. He was arrested after store employees identified him to police.

An international crime ring that imported thousands of kilograms of heroin to the Netherlands was broken up this week with the arrests of three people in Amsterdam and Dordrecht. Authorities said the drugs were brought to the capital to then be distributed back out to Germany, the Scandinavian countries, and the United Kingdom.

Scores of emergency personnel raced to the town hall in Nijkerk after a driver smashed his pick-up truck through the exterior glass and into the lobby. Video shot at the scene showed the truck then reverse out of the building, before then driving back in again.

The driver was injured during the Friday morning incident and transported to an area hospital. He was being kept in police custody as the circumstances around the incident were being investigated, authorities said.

The Public Prosecution Service (OM) expects to have to postpone at least 22,700 lawsuits this year due to capacity problems and "more complex lawsuits". Years of budget cuts has left the service with not enough manpower, and the "more complex society" results in lawsuits taking up more time, a spokesperson for the OM confirmed to NU.nl after reports in the Telegraaf.

The police and national animal protection inspectorate LID rescued 49 cats and five skunks from a home in Nieuwkoop last week. The animals were poorly cared for and lived in very dirty surroundings, LID said in a statement, calling it "a serious form of animal neglect".

Aziz A., a suspected jihadist who played a leading role in terrorist movement Jubhat al-Nusra according to the authorities, has also been linked to 19 murders in Syria in 2012, the Public Prosecutor revealed in a proforma hearing against the 34-year-old man on Thursday. Complicity in these 19 murders have been added to the suspicions against him, the Prosecutor said, AD report.

An investigation into a ship in the Mercuriushaven in Amsterdam uncovered 37 kilograms of cocaine. Authorities estimated the value of the drugs to be €1.8 million, a spokesperson from the Fiscal Information and Investigation Service (FIOD) told NL Times.

The cocaine was found in backpacks on the vessel, which had originated from Brazil. At the time of the investigation, the ship was being used to transport animal feed, FIOD said.

A video showing a man firing an AK47 in a residential neighborhood in Rotterdam Zuid over New Year's led to the arrests of two men for illegal firearm possession, the police said in a statement. The video was found on a phone confiscated for another investigation.

The video shows a man shooting the automatic rifle in the air with fireworks going off in the background. The residents of the Rotterdam neighborhood seemingly did not notice the gunshots due to the fireworks being lit by others.

A search of a van near the Rotterdam Port uncovered six men, likely of Iranian and Iraqi nationality, hidden in a small secret compartment inside the vehicle. Four people were arrested on suspicion of people smuggling after authorities made the discovery.

The van, which had a Romanian license plate, was inspected by authorities before driving aboard a ferry headed to England. The six others in the vehicle shot out of the van when officers found the hidden compartment.

This time he made a snide comment to one of the victims who survived the attack. "I no longer want the suspect in the room," the court president said, NOS reports. Dutch aid workers from foundation Bootvluchteling are in hiding after they were attacked on the Greek island of Lesbos. "During an evacuation of colleagues in the [refugee] camp, we were driven into a kind of trap. We were attacked with steel tubes and our cars were attacked," one aid worker said to NOS.

"It is currently not safe as an aid worker on Lesbos", the aid worker, who asked to remain anonymous for their own safety, said to the broadcaster.

A 43-year-old American man was fined 750 euros at Schiphol airport on Sunday after Koninklijke Marechaussee officers found a large amount of Second World War armaments in his luggage. His suitcase contained three hand grenades, a part of a mortar grenade, over 30 bullet shells, and various other ammunition parts, the Marechaussee said on Facebook.

The man told the authorities that he collects WWII items. He said he found the armaments with a metal detector in Germany and wanted to take them home with him. Because the items contained no explosive charges, he saw no harm in it.

Just after flight MH17 was shot down in eastern Ukraine, the Dutch armed forces had concrete plans to enter the country and surround the disaster area - to safeguard evidence and remains, the Telegraaf reports based on an interview with Commander of the Land Forces Martin Wijnen. This is the first time the Ministry of Defense confirms rumors of this mission, according to the newspaper.

A man found dead in his home in Boxmeer, Noord-Brabant early Monday morning likely died as the result of a crime, police said. Few details were released in the case, with Boxmeer residents concerned by a stabbing during a home invasion robbery there last week, and another stabbing in front of the town hall the week prior.
