Schiphol will try to stop a security guard strike at the airport next week Tuesday in court "We want to do everything possible to ensure that passengers do not suffer", a spokesperson for the airport said to RTL Nieuws.

Security guards plan to strike for 24 hours on Tuesday, September 4th. The strike would affect some 200 thousand travelers. "Everyone who flies has to go through the security check. If that is not possible, you can't fly", the Schiphol spokesperson said.

Most of the Eindhoven residents who rent out their homes through Airbnb do not pay tourist tax, according to ANG, a specialized company hired to inspect Airbnb accommodation in the Noord-Brabant city. This means that the city treasury is missing out on a large sum of income, NOS reports.

Over the past month ANG contacted more than a hundred Airbnb landlords and inspected 38 Airbnb locations. "Only 30 to 40 addresses paid the sum of 3.50 euros per person per night", the company said.

Forty percent of parents think that childcare is too expensive, according to a survey by social and cultural planning office SCP. What Dutch parents want is good, but above all affordable childcare, the researchers conclude, ANP reports.

The SCP researchers surveyed 1,800 parents of babies and toddlers. They found that many parents do not send their child to childcare because they find it too expensive. According to the SCP, those parents may not know exactly how expensive childcare really is and therefore have a distorted mage of the costs.

Caught speeding in the Netherlands lately? There's a good chance that you won't be getting a fine. Police officers participating in labor actions for a better collective bargaining agreement are deleting speed camera photos as part of the actions, RTL Editie reports. 

Officers from Oost-Brabant say they already deleted some 5,600 photos from speed cameras. According to Maarten Brink of the police unions' national action center, the officers in the other nine police units deleted similar numbers. So a total of around 50 thousand speeders will not be getting fines.

The number of thrift stores in the Netherlands increased by 7 percent last year - the third year in a row that this industry grew. Retail turnover increased by 4 percent last year, and the amount of items collected increased by 5 percent , according to the sector association for thrift companies BKN, NU.nl reports.

The Christmas holidays last year in particular were "unprecedentedly busy" for thrift stores, according to BKN. The association attributes this to the VPRO television series Het succes van de kringloopwinkel.

The Netherlands is not sufficiently prepared to deal with the consequences of a long-term gas shortage, according to a crisis plan from the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Climate that EenVandaag got hold of by appealing to the freedom of information act.

The crisis plan describes possible steps the Netherlands can take if gas extraction in Groningen has to be halted sooner than planned, for example due to a massive earthquake, and if the country can't get enough gas from abroad to meet the demand. The plan dates from January 2018.

A German sea mine was detonated off the coast of Zeeland on Thursday morning. The mine was discovered in July, during installation of a power cable for the Borssele wind farm, RTL Nieuws reports.

The explosive weighed nearly 700 kilograms. The navy branch of Defense's Explosives Ordnance Disposal service detonated the mine some 1,500 kilometers from the coast near Vlissingnen from navy mine-hunting vessel Zr. MS. Urk.

Shipping traffic was halted while the mine was detonated.

Staff shortages increased significantly in construction over the past years. In addition to material shortage, the need for construction workers is seen as the main obstacle to growth in the sector, according to the stats office.

Many Dutch municipalities with a university or college have more young female residents than young male residents, Statistics Netherlands reported on Wednesday. The difference is biggest in Utrecht, where there are only 73 men for every 100 women in the age group 20 to 25 years old. 

Leiden counts 74 young men for a 100 young women, Maastricht 76, Nijmegen 77 and Wageningen 79. Also in Amstelveen and Weesp, where many Amsterdam students live, there are more young women than young men.

A plane landed safely at Eindhoven Airport on Wednesday after experiencing technical difficulties, the fire brigade said. The Wizz Air flight from Bucharest to Eindhoven carried 228 people, a spokesperson for the airport said to Omroep Brabant.

According to the spokesperson, there was a problem with the flaps on a wing of the plane. As a result, the plane landed at higher speed than normal. The pilot managed to touch down safely. No one was injured. 

The fire department, ambulances and police were on standby at the airport so that they could intervene if necessary.

Unions FNV and CNV are calling on security officers at Schiphol Airport to strike for 24 hours on September 4th. Strikes will also be held at other locations, but the unions have not yet said where, NOS reports.

"Schiphol has already received a notice from us because a 24 hour strike has consequences for the airport and air traffic", Mohamed Gafki of FNV said, according to the broadcaster. "Agreements can now be made to ensure that things go smoothly. Passengers can be informed in a timely manner, tickets can be rebooked, flights can be canceled, and so on."

As schools reopen after the summer holidays, Dutch safe traffic association VVN is calling on trucks to stay away from schools, especially when schools start and get out. This can help prevent serious accidents involving children, the association said to AD.

"They could ride a quarter of an hour earlier or later, or take a different route", VVN spokesperson Rob Stomphorst said to the newspaper.
