Pupils in primary schools in disadvantaged Dutch neighborhoods are significantly behind their peers in regular neighborhoods, according to a study by research agency MWM2 commissioned by ABN Amro, Stichting Kinderpostzegels and education fund Jeugddeducatiefonds, newspaper AD reports.

The researchers questioned 300 teachers, counselors and primary school directors.

A significant proportion of former students are struggling to repay their student loans. One in five are currently in arrears, NOS reports based on figures from education executive agency DUO.

According to DUO, the former students who are in arrears either cannot repay their loans for financial reasons, do not want to repay their student loans, or don't realize they are in arrears, for example because they don't read their emails.

Dozens of boats will block Amsterdam's Herengracht in front of the official residence of Mayor Femke Halsema on Tuesday evening in protest against proposed new sailing rules. The demonstrators hope to create a boat-traffic jam in front of the mayor's door, NU.nl reports.

The wealth inequality between Dutch households decreased since 2015. That has to do with the improving housing market, Statistics Netherlands reported on Tuesday based on data from 2011 to 2017. Income inequality remained at basically the same level in that period.

The Dutch police want to recruit 17 thousand new police officers in the next seven years. To help achieve this, the police launched a large recruitment campaign on the internet, the television, social media and the street on Tuesday.

The campaign aims to show the many tasks that police officers perform on a daily basis, as well as the person behind the uniform. Multiple police officers tell what being a cop is like in campaign videos. "Because only if you really understand what is involved in police work, you can choose it with all your heart", the police said.

The Netherlands' authority for consumers and markets ACM launched an investigation into whether contractors made illegal price agreements in the ground, road and hydraulic engineering sector in the municipality of Amsterdam. The ACM received tips that different contractors made potentially forbidden agreements in government tenders, such as making agreements on the level of prices quoted to ensure who will receive the contract, NU.nl reports.

Some 300 canoes were destroyed in a fire at canoe rental company Rofra in Valkenswaard during the early hours of Tuesday morning. The police and fire department suspect arson. "There is someone who is really angry at me", Rofra owner Michel Geenen said to newspaper AD.

The fire at the company on Molenstraat started just after midnight. The fire brigade responded with two fire trucks and two water tanks. Firefighters managed to get the fire under control within 30 minutes, but not fast enough to save any of the canoes.

A KLM Boeing 737 landed at Schiphol airport with a broken engine on Sunday morning. The plane full of passengers came from Portugal. The cause of the broken engine is still unknown and is being investigated, a KLM spokesperson said to the Telegraaf.

"We are figuring it out", the spokesperson said to the newspaper. It is possible that a bird ended up in the engine, causing a fire. "The passengers were not in danger and there was no panic on board. The aircraft landed safely", according to the spokesperson.

The Police Academy announced that it is adjusting the fitness test for aspiring police officers. This follows complaints to police unions NPB and ACP that the test was too strict, did not take personal circumstances into account, and was not taken in the same way at all Police Academy locations, NOS reports.

The so-called Professional Fit test consists of 500 meters of rowing, squats, pushups, pull-ups, sit-ups, burpees and 1,600 meters of running. Those who repeatedly fail the test are disqualified from the Police Academy.

Four in ten university employees in the Netherlands have been personally confronted with a socially unsafe working environment, according to a study by unions FNV and VAWO. They report facing bullying, abuse of power, humiliation, exclusion, and sexual harassment, for example. Half work in an apartment where the social working environment is unsafe, the researchers found, NU.nl reports.

A fire broke out in a New York Pizza building on Nobelstraat in the center of Utrecht after an explosion on Monday morning, local safety office Veiligheidsregio Utrecht said on Twitter. The fire department is at the scene in large numbers to extinguish the fire, NU.nl reports.

Exactly what caused the explosion is not yet clear, a spokesperson for the safety office said to the newspaper. It is also unknown whether anyone was in the building when the explosion happened. Paramedics are treating a number of people for smoke inhalation, the spokesperson said.

Economic growth in the Netherlands will slow down this year, and that will affect businesses, according to ABN Amro. The bank's economists expect the Dutch economy to grow by 1.4 percent this year, almost half the growth 2018 saw. And the number of bankruptcies, excluding sole traders, will increase by 10 percent, ABN Amro expects, NU.nl reports.

After years of growth, the use of Airbnb in Amsterdam fell for the first time last year, according to real estate adviser Colliers based on figures from research agency AirDNA. Airbnb itself has not yet released figures for 2018, NOS reports.

The number of Airbnb overnight stays in Amsterdam fell by 5 percent to 1.98 million last year, according to Colliers. The number of accommodations decreased by 8.3 percent t 25,380. Airbnb's market share compared to hotels and other accommodation providers decreased from 11.6 percent in 2017 to 10.4 percent in 2018.

The University of Groningen set a total of 70 thousand euros aside for a farewell party for the rector of the university, according to student movement DAG. Minister Ingrid van Engelshoven of Education, Culture and Science asked the university for an explanation, NU.nl reports.

According to the student movement, "in times of cutbacks and towering work pressure for teachers" the 70 thousand euros can be spent in other ways. "Instead, the Executive Board chooses to organize a party for itself."

A group of Intertoys franchisers are filing summary proceedings against the toy chain. They believe that the contract they were offered by the recently restarted company is "bad and unbalanced" and does not correspond to basic agreements previously made, Financieele Dagblad reports based on leaked correspondence. 

The franchisers feel compelled to sign this contract, because otherwise they will be cut off from the chain, according to the newspaper. They hope that the court will ensure that they can continue to use Intertoys' IT system, among other things.

The four dials on the Domtoren in Utrecht, which date from 1915, were removed on Monday morning. They will be restored in the coming period. "It is a memorable moment that the tower can be viewed without dials", tower manager Jaap van Engelenburg said to NU.nl. "I said jokingly: It is as if someone who has been wearing a beard for ten years suddenly shaves it off. The Domtoren suddenly has a bare face."
