As many as 500,000 people visited the 37th edition of the Uitmarkt across Amsterdam last weekend, with 2,000 different artists performing on the Leidseplein and Museumplein. Roughly the same number of attendees dropped in on the festival last year, reported broadcaster AT5.

Theo van Gogh fans will be able to see all 13 films he made at Amsterdam's EYE Film Museum from the 10th of October onwards. In this retrospective, some of the more negative thinking about the filmmaker, known for his criticism of Islam, is hoped to be dispelled and replaced with respect for Van Gogh's passion as film maker and film lover.

In Utrecht, legendary Dutch artist Dick Bruna has put down his pencil. The creator of Nijntje, or Miffy, is retiring. The Nijntje book that came out in 2011 is the last that the 86-year old will ever illustrate because he says he wants to take it easy at his age, RTV Utrecht reports.

A painting by Dutch Golden Age master Johannes Vermeer sold at auction 6.2 million British pounds (€7.8 million) at Christie’s auction house in London on Tuesday. “Sint Praxedis” shows Saint Praxedis, the supposedly virginal daughter of Saint Pudens, a former Roman senator, and sister of Saint Pudentiana, squeezing out a sponge saturated with the blood of a martyr into a chalice.
