Over 9,200 fines for phone use while cycling

More than 9,200 fines were issued for calling or texting while cycling since doing so was banned on July 1st this year, The Ministry of Justice and Security announced on Friday, AD reports.

Between May 1st and August 31st the number of fines for smartphone use in traffic, including bicycles and motorized vehicles, almost doubled from over 23 thousand in that period last year to over 44 thousand this year. Those caught using their phone on their bicycle face a fine of 95 euros. Using your phone while driving a car or other type of motorized vehicle carries a fine of 240 euros.

In total, just under 3 million fines for traffic violations were issued between May and August this year, compared to 3.2 million in the same period last year. Speeding is still the most common traffic violation. A massive 2.5 million of the fines issued were for speeding.

The amounts involved in traffic fines will be higher next year.
