A large fire broke out in the canteen of the Vossius Gymnasium in Amsterdam on Monday evening. The fire caused considerable damage. The 800 pupils of the high school will therefore have the day off on Tuesday, RTL Nieuws reports.

A number of pupils were at the school for night classes when the fire started. They all managed to get out of the building unharmed.

It took firefighters all night to extinguish the fire, according to RTL Nieuws. The fire department had to demolish part of the canteen in order to keep the fire from spreading to the rest of the school.

"There is a lot of smoke damage in the building and tomorrow the whole building will have to be aired out", a spokesperson for the school said to RTL on Monday night. "Then only will we be able to see how great the damage really is."
