Icy roads expected during rush hour; code yellow warning in effect
Commuters in the Netherlands must be extra careful when driving to work on Friday morning. The roads can be icy due to wet areas freezing overnight, and due to winter showers in the northern and northeastern parts of the country, meteorological institute KNMI warns.
A code yellow warning is in effect for the entire country, except the Wadden Islands, until 10:00 a.m. "All road users may be affected. Adjust your driving behavior. Follow weather reports and warnings", the KNMI warns.
Overnight Dutch public works department Rijkswaterstaat spread 1.96 million kilograms of salt on public roads to combat iciness. A map of which roads have been covered can be found here. "Stay alert", Rijkswaterstaat advises.
The southern parts of the country may also face some fog this morning, according to the KNMI. The fog should dissipate by late morning.
The day will be partly sunny and largely dry, except in the northern and northeastern parts of the country where there is still a chance of winter showers during the morning. Maximum temperatures will range from 5 degrees Celsius along the coast to 2 degrees Celsius inland.
Minimum temperatures on Friday night will drop to -2 in the southwest and -6 in the northeast. Saturday will also be partly sunny, but colder. Afternoon temperatures will climb no higher than 2 degrees Celsius. The southern parts of the country have a small chance of seeing some light snow during the afternoon and evening.
