Cop, two others hurt in Winterswijk shooting
A police officer and two others were injured in a shooting incident in Winterswijk during the early hours of Sunday morning. A total of five suspects were arrested, the police said in a statement.
At around 1:00 a.m. the police received a report from a resident of Keizersdwarsweg, saying that someone vandalized his front door. The resident said the vandals left in a car, but threatened to come back. The police responded to the home and notified patrolling officers to keep an eye out for the car.
While the officers were at the home, speaking to the resident, a car arrived an shots were fired at the home, the police said. One officer was grazed by a bullet. The police shot at the car as it sped away.
A short time later, other officers noticed the car, a black Skoda with 99 in its license plate, driving over Rondweg West in Winterswijk. They pulled the car over and found a seriously injured woman with a gunshot wound inside. She was rushed to hospital by helicopter. The injured woman and the driver of the car were arrested. On Europalaan other officers noticed an injured man. He was arrested as a suspect and treated for his injuries.
Two other men were arrested as suspects in the house on Keizersdwarsweg.
The police are investigating exactly what happened at the home and who shot at the injured officer. The Rijksrecherche, the department that handles internal investigations at government services like the police, is investigating the police's role in this incident and the officers' use of their firearms. This is standard procedure whenever a police officer fires his or her service weapon.
