Unwell driver pushed to safety by other motorists on Dutch highway
A motorist became unwell while driving on the A5 highway at Westpoort on Monday morning. Other motorists saw it happen and pushed his car to a standstill against the guardrail. They then provided first aid while the emergency services responded. The police called it a "heroic act" on Twitter.
"We are very happy that people were so alert and helpful", a police spokesperson said to AT5. "They prevented worse from happening."
The incident happened around 9:30 a.m. on Monday on the A5 highway towards Schiphol. The car of the unwell driver suddenly swerved across the road, hitting a van and the left guardrail. Other motorists intervened immediately. Using their cars, they pushed the unwell man's car into the right guardrail, bringing him to a standstill. They could not get the sick man's car door open, so broke the rear window with a tow rope. They provided first aid until the emergency services arrived.
The man was taken to hospital.
The police thanked the other motorists for their "great performance", according to AT5. "It could have easily been much worse. Now there's only damage to the bodywork." The police will make contact with the rescuers to arrange the insurance work.
