Car crashes into tree; two killed, three seriously hurt

Two people were killed and three seriously injured in a car accident on Lonerstraat in Assen on Wednesday night, the Drenthe police said on Twitter. The car crashed into a tree for as yet unknown reasons. The police are investigating.

Emergency services, including multiple ambulances and a trauma helicopter, responded to the scene en masse. The injured people were stabilized and taken to hospital by ambulance.

There were five young men, all around 20 years old, in the car wen it crashed, according to Dagblad van het Noorden. They were training at football association Asser Boys earlier in the evening. The football association is located on Lonerstraat.

The police are investigating how the accident happened.
