Man arrested for kidnapping Weert girl, 6
The police arrested a 24-year-old man from Weert for abducting a 6-year-old girl in the Limburg city last week. The girl was playing in a playground when the man spoke to her, grabbed her and bundled into the boot of his car. The girl was released a short time later.
Witnesses told 1Limburg that the girl kept screaming while in the trunk of the car. She was let out of the car a few streets away from the playground and ran home. The girl was very frightened, but otherwise unharmed.
In a statement on Thursday the police wrote that the suspect was tracked down thanks to various tips, "but especially the good cooperation of residents in the neighborhood". According to the police, during the investigation, residents gave their "full cooperation" and provided the police with surveillance camera footage on which the suspect's car could be seen, among other things.
The police believe that the suspect acted alone. No further details were given about his identity. According to RTL Nieuws, the police previously said they don't believe the abductor knows the girl or her family.
The suspect is in custody for questioning. He will be arraigned on Friday.
