Some 90,000 Dutch hit in Facebook data scandal
Around 90 thousand Dutch people were affected by Facebook data abuse by political advertising company Cambridge Analytica, Facebook said to NOS. Worldwide this data abuse affected 87 million people.
Last month a whistleblower revealed that Cambridge Analytica collected Facebook user data using a free game. This information was used to create psychological profiles of Facebook users, which in turn were used to show political advertisements. According to Facebook, up to 87 million people worldwide were affected by this, the majority of them - around 70 million - in the United States.
On Monday Facebook will release a tool with which users can check whether they were affected. The social media platform will also warn affected users with a message at the top of their timeline.
Next week Wednesday, at 4:00 p.m. Dutch time, Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg will address the United States Congress, according to NU.nl. He will speak about the security of user data, and how Facebook uses this data.
