Dutch newcomer Visser takes gold on 5 km speed skating
With a sensational race, skater Esmee Visser won gold in the 5 kilometers at her first ever Olympic Games on Thursday. She is also only the second Dutch woman to win the longest distance, after Yvonne van Gennip, NOS reports.
"Really great, I have no words for it", Visser said in a first reaction to her Olympic title.
She won with a time of 6:50:23. Second went to Czech skater Martina Sáblíková with a time of 6:51:85, and third to Natalia Voronina with a time of 6:53:98. A very disappointed Annouk van der Wijden just missed the podium and came in fourth with a time of 6:54:17.
