Large fire at Roosendaal car company; residents warned to stay out of smoke
A large fire is raging at the warehouse of a car company on De Meeten in Roosendaal on Wednesday morning. A thick cloud of black smoke is moving towards the city center. The local safety office is calling on residents to stay out of the smoke and keep their windows and doors closed.
According to BN De Stem, the warehouse is built from a number of containers. Burning plastic and rubber is causing a lot of smoke. The warehouse also contains gas cylinders with acetylene, used for welding work. The fire department is changing its extinguishing method, to prevent the gas bottles from exploding "aggressively", according to the newspaper.
No chemicals were stored in the building, so the smoke does not contain extra concentrations of hazardous substances. As the fire is difficult to reach, the fire department expects that extinguishing it will take a long time yet.
Nearby companies are being kept wet, to prevent the fire from spreading. The shops at the nearby GoStores shopping center are open as usual. De Dijkrand is partly closed due to the fire.
