Dutch firm DSM beats Apple for #2 on Fortune's "Change the World" list

Dutch food-science company DSM made it to second place on Fortune's "Change the World" list - a ranking of companies that have a positive social impact on the world through their core business. DSM was praised for its efforts in fighting malnutrition and famine with its fortified-nutrition products.

According to Fortune, famine threatens the lives of 20 million people in Africa and the Middle East this year and DSM is fighting on the front lines. With its fortified-nutrition products, DSM helps the World Food Program reach about 31 million people every year.

"The company is working on longer-term ways to eliminate hunger and malnutrition too", Fortune writes, mentioning DSM's joint venture with the Rwandan government and development agencies called African Improved Foods. This venture is aimed at boosting local food processing.  The African Improved Foods Kigali-based plant is run by East Africans. It produces fortified cereal, made from locally grown maize and soybeans produced by 7,500 local smallholder farmers, according to Fortune.

With its second place on the Change the World List, DSM beats globally known companies like Apple in 3rd place, Toyota in 8th place and Johnson & Johnson in 9th place. First place went to American bank JPMorgan Chase for its blueprint for urban economic revival.
