Missing runaway found drowned in Rijn river
Police divers found the body of a 17-year-old boy in the Rijn river near Wageningen on Tuesday night. The boy and a friend were reported missing earlier on Tuesday after they ran away from a youth institution in Zetten, according to Omroep Gelderland.
It seems the two teenagers wanted to swim across the Rijn. One boy made it to the other side. But the 17-year-old from Den Bosch disappeared underwater.
Emergency services were called in and a search was launched for the boy, using a police helicopter, boats and the ferry between Wageningen and Randwijk. Nearly 50 people helped in the search. The boy's body was found around 8:30 p.m., hours after he went under, according to NOS. The boy's family was informed.
The two boys ran away from the Helderstichting youth institution in Zetten, according to Omroep Gelderland. The institution treats children and young people with developmental problems and behavioral disorders.
