Two football fans, one cop hurt at Ajax vs Schalke match
Two fans and a police officer were injured around the Europa League quarter final match between Ajax and Schalke 04 at the Veltins Arena in Gelsenkirchen, Germany on Thursday, the German police said in a statement. There were also 129 arrests and charges filed against 49 people.
The police did not say whether the injured fans were Dutch or German.
Despite the arrests and injuries, the German police are satisfied with the evening. "Despite isolated incidents and clashes in the run up to the match, the peaceful supporters of both clubs showed how a violence free and spirited quarter final in the Europa League can look", the Gelsenkirchen police said in the statement.
Ajax lost the thrilling match 3-2. Schalke scored a goal in extra time and the Amsterdam team scored two. The very late goals see Ajax through on aggregate into the Europa League semis.
An Ajax fan was arrested in Gelsenkirchen during the early hours of Thursday morning. He emptied a fire extinguisher in his hotel room and then through it out the window, Het Parool reports.
