Crazy rush hour expected in Amsterdam due to fire in Schiphol tunnel
The entire Schiphol tunnel from Amsterdam (A4) to The Hague is still closed on Tuesday morning following a fire on Monday afternoon. Traffic information service ANWB calls on motorists to avoid Amsterdam during rush hour and to travel to the airport by train, AD reports.
The fire in Schiphol tunnel on Monday afternoon resulted in the A4 being closed and traffic from Amsterdam to The Hague being diverted. This meant an evening rush hour packed with traffic jams, which spread across the Centrum Ring to the Kinkestraat junction.
Early on Tuesday morning there were talks that two lanes in the Schiphol tunnel would be opened for morning rush hour. But public works department Rijkswaterstaat decided to keep the entire tunnel closed after all.
Schiphol is warning passengers about extra travel time to the airport and advising them to rather take the train.
The A4 tunnel to The Hague remains closed until after morning rush hour. We advise passengers to come by train or to leave home early. https://t.co/Zf2I6w4rqh
