Anti-gas drilling petitions at Groningen voting stations
Groningen residents are not only voting in the parliamentary elections today, they are also given the opportunity to sign a petition against gas drilling in the province. During the night, groups of volunteers hung posters at nearly all 406 polling stations in Groningen, calling on voters to sign a petition by Freek de Jonge, RTV Noord reports.
The giant posters mostly consist of a cartoon drawing showing a NAM worker and a propped up house. And a call to sign the petition. It seems to be effective. So far over 140 thousand people signed the petition, according to the broadcaster.
"We ask people to sign the petition. And with it we obviously also point out the problems with gas drilling", Stef Driessen, one of the volunteers, said to RTV Noord. "We hope that in this way more people will go sign the petition."
