Explosive thrown into A'dam bar a hand grenade, police confirm
An explosive found in Amsterdam's In The City Cafe on Kleine Gartmanplantsoen on Wednesday was a hand grenade, the police confirmed, according to NOS.
The cafe and surrounding area were evacuated following the discovery of the explosive and closed down for several hours while an Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) team disarmed it.
A bystander told local broadcaster AT5 that someone threw a hand grenade into the cafe. The police won't say anything about how the grenade came to be in the bar, in the interest of the investigation.
Investigating officers are looking at surveillance camera footage, according to NOS. And the EOD and Netherlands Forensic Institute (NFI) are investigating the grenade.
According to the police, the people in the cafe and surrounding area were not in any danger.
Mayor Eberhard van der Laan closed the cafe indefinitely following the discovery of the explosive.
