Cop's death in NYE crash stuns police force
Police officer Mario from Boskoop, who was hit by a car on the Kaaseplein in The Hague over New Year's, passed away on Monday night, the Hague police announced on Facebook. The 36-year-old cop sustained severe brain injuries in the accident and was in a coma since it happened.
"It touches the whole unit enormously when a colleague is torn from life by a tragic accident", Police Chief Paul van Musscher said in a statement on Facebook. "I share the feeling of powerlessness and sadness with my people, who are deeply affected by the loss of their colleague. In Mario we lose a beloved colleague, an enthusiastic police officer with a passion for the profession and for the police as an organization. Our thoughts go out to the family, friends and colleagues of Mario."
Officer Mario's family also released a statement via the police. "For the past 9 days we lived between hope and fear. Despite all the good care of the medical team, it was not meant to be. We again would like to thank everyone for the many messages of support and well wishes. They are of indescribable value to us." the family said. The family asked the media to respect their privacy and not approach them for the time being. "We as survivors have a long way to go, but draw strength from our close family ties. We hope that now, especially now, we will have the opportunity to handle this immense loss together in peace."
The police station on De Heemstraat is closed for reports and charges for the time being. Anyone who wishes to leave a message of support for Mario's family, friends and colleagues can do it there.
Police officer Mario was hit by a woman over New Year's. According to the police, there is no evidence of intent - it was an accident. They believe the woman could not see the officer due to poor visibility caused by a fire on Hoefkade. The woman was questioned and sent home to await the results of an investigation.
