Police shoot a man after possible hostage situation
A police officer shot a suspect in Westervoort early on Monday morning after a report came in about a possible hostage situation and a man waving a knife around in a home on Klapstraat, the Gelderlander reports.
The police responded to the home around 1:40 a.m. with negotiators and a SWAT team. The negotiators tried to talk the man with the knife off the home's balcony, but to no avail. Eventually a police officer shot the man in the hip.
An air ambulance responded to the scene around 3:10 a.m. to take the wounded man to the hospital.
The circumstances of what happened in the home are still unclear.
The Rijksrecherche - the department that handles internal investigations at the police and other government services - will investigate the shooting. This is standard procedure when ever a police officer fires his or her service weapon.
